I recently acquired a one owner 1993 Mark VIII with 73K miles on it. Yes you read right 73k miles.
I have owned and raced Mustangs for 15 years but this platform is new to me.
I am amazed at how hard this thing pulls. So far all I have done to her is the following:
Mobil 1 synthetic 5 w30
removed air silencer and cut out front of air box
swapped out factory plugs for autolite 103s ( colder plug )
been using premium fuel
next weekend I am flushing the trany and refilling with Mercon V.
after the trany flush I will take her to the track for some baseline numbers.
My question is what do these tanks respond to the best?
I owned a 96 COBRA and noticed that as the mods piled on the low end torque went to hell but the upper power band would sing and pull hard. I am assuming its the same with these Marks? And if so this might be an issue getting this heavy thing to leave the line.
Also from the track times I have seen it seems that the biggest issue with these cars is in the 60ft times. Not surprising heavy cars have a hard time leaving. But their MPH at the trap indicates once they are moving the are MOVING.
I feel confident though I will not be sure until I take her to the track that this thing can see a high 13 as long as I can get her to leave hard.
Basically I would like to hear from the folks who have been racing these Marks.
Will drag radials and some weight reduction be enough to get this thing out of the hole?
In the end I would like to get her in the low 13s with the least amount of mods possible.
As the years have gone by I have changed from wanting the most power to wanting the quickest ET with the least amount of power. I also see quite often that a lot of guys ignore the 60ft and spend most of their time and money on power.
One more question ....does anyone know who has the fastest NA mark with factory long block?
