Opening a shop, need pros tool advice.

sapp i need ur info on the shop ill drive both my marks to u guys...

Another thing Bill, with you being out of work the government would give you Pell grants to go to a trade school for any skill you would like to bring to the business but might be lacking. Same goes for you Sapperfire. You always get extra money for other expenses, and you do not have to pay it back.

Sapper, nobody trusts just brakes. Rick wants me to replace his rotors and pads and I can tell ya the labor will be more then the "We do brakes from $99!" ad you guys have!

I wouldnt mind doing it here but I hear the same damn thing from all my contacts. "I would drive from Dallas to Waco to have you work on my car but not as far as Dawson and then drive down a gravel road.

Getting parts is a bitch too! When I need a .50 clamp I have to drive over 40 miles round trip. That eats an hour of my day and $7 worth of gas!

You dont know just how remote I am. I have customers that drive over 25 miles to come to me but I would have a whole lot more regulars with a proper shop.

Its worth it to me to take the chance. I am sick of "what if I woulda, what if I tried this, I shoulda did that" and want a "Glad I did that, or, it didnt work but I at least tried."

Thats just me I guess. Sick of regrets from roads not tried.

I understand you wanting to take a chance, just be smart about it. My expertise is restaurants so I can't talk about the mechanics game, but there seem to be some people who know what they are talking about in this thread. Do it once, do it right and succeed.

I went to a community college and I took TIG welding, alternative fuels and any other class I thought would be helpful in addition to my mechanic program; I think I took every electrical class they offered through automotive to be up-to-date on newer cars.

The PELL grant barely covered the tuition and books but it was not a financial burden either. Plus, the tool companies give you a discount when you are in a tech school to buy your equipment.

My favorite class was Yoga, you just can't beat the scenery in the gym with a bunch of young hotties :cool

Since Laser's location prevents you guys from using his place, have you considered doing "mobile" service instead of opening a shop?

Sounds like you've got some customers that are more than willing to work with you. What if you had a way to "go to them"?

There is a discussion over on Garage Journal about this...might be worth a read.

I've thought of that, but would require a large truck or van, can't haul jacks and air compressors around in Mark8s

My brother does did some side mech work from ads he put on craigslist. He had one brake job he did in a parking lot of an autozone or hi/lo. But lucky for him he had a pick up truck to haul his tool. The bad thing is it was a good drive about 30 minutes. To me mobile mech work won't work out considering gas cost. And maintance on the mech vehicle.

This place has been helpful to me. stay away from the snap-on truck and the mac truck. You are not charging enough to afford them. Keep an eye out for a lift . My last shop had one and I miss it every day. Harbor freight has a hydraulic table that is affordable and stout. Very useful and can handle an eaton fuller 13 speed transmission with no problems at all. GOOD LUCK!

So we were trying to come up with shop names.
That Automotive Performance Shop
Two Guys Garrage

Thats about all I got. Did come up with a couple company credos though.
"Youll get what we give you and you'll like it!"
or
"Heres some extra bolts we had left over."

How about

DRIVEN AUTOMOTIVE

speaks volumes for both of you driven for the dream!!

Driven to exceed your needs!

"welcome to our shop. Please sign this liability waiver."

How bout Wrench monkey, two guy garrage is a tv show maybe two guy Carage , "we fix what you break" "FORD= Found On (the)Road Dead".

I am going to get my brother Barry to look on here and see if he can contribute. He has had his own garage for around 25 years ( BARRY'S PERFORMANCE). He will reply under my name but explain that it's him. GOOD LUCK and Happy New Year.

So went to look at some shops today. Found ione place thats great but has 9 or 10 bays (4-doouble wide and 2 regular) but there is no contact info so I have to try and figure out who owns it and whats up with it. Then found another place thats almost perfect. Its a douoble with storage, office, kitchen and bathroom plus a large storage area out back. Not sure about bay room if there is enough space for all the tools and two full sevice bays. Rent is less then half what I thought it would be so we may try and squeeze in there.

Place I still am trying to find out about:
