P0022 then P0021

Here's what I have:

Both sides, Bank 1 (Pass) and Bank 2 (Dr) have continuity from the VCT clip to the PCM connector.

Bank 1
WH/BL -> PCM: 1.3 ohms
WH/BL -> ground: OL
Green -> Ground: 3.05k

Bank 2
WH/VT - > PCM: 1.3
WH/VT-> ground: OL

Green - > 3.05k then 15 k then OL depending on how I wiggled the probe in the connector.

Bank 1 did not change if I wiggled the probe.

I have some new connectors on their way and should be here tomorrow. An added bonus, this allowed me to really clean out the cabin air cowl.

My "stash" didn't show up from the Amazon so I went to a local yard and clipped a couple from a car there. I soldered the "new" one in and when I started the car up, it seemed to run ok, a little rough but not like it was. Then it began idling worse. I then noticed I hadn't put the connector onto the Bank 1 VCT. I had taken it off to compare the difference in resistance between the two sides.

The idling got progressively worse. I have two codes. Still the P0021 and a P2106 which I am thinking is a result of the poor idling and P0021.
So, my next steps? New VCT 1X4Z-6M280-AA 1X4Z6M280AA - Ford Parts Giant

Is this the phaser?

or this

FPG and Tasca have a habit of saying parts are in stock, when they aren't.

Your best bet is to call your local dealer... give them your VIN, and hope it is still in stock.

Parts for the LS are going obsolete, with many no longer available. If that is the case... then an internet search for the Jag phaser is the last option.

Reason for all this is that Jag owners have been buying up the Ford parts... because they are the same but cheaper alternative.

Call Terry's Jaguar in Kalamazoo to verify fitment.

Yeah, no doubt. I went through that with a couple other parts. Tasha had it listed and when I called they said they didn’t have it.

I posted those just to make sure I was identifying the right parts.

Are these parts like the cooling system parts? Do I need Motorcraft or can aftermarket suffice?

I don't believe there is an aftermarket for the cam phasers. Just the high dollar Jag ones.

PM me the last 8 digits of your VIN. I'll call my dealer buddy tomorrow and see what the proper part number is... and if it is still available.

It's the drivers side phaser... correct? Maybe that doesn't matter.

As an afterthought... maybe just the oil control solenoid went bad. (that feeds the phaser).

Joe may be able to give input on that.

P2106 just means the PCM put the car in "limp mode".

Got to thinking... maybe the oil control solenoid went bad. It controls the oil flow through the phaser based on throttle position... which advances or retards the camshaft timing.

I was thinking that with the front cover and valve cover gasket job I did a month or so ago, some crusty oil or dirt fell into the oil and got lodged in the VCT solenoid or someplace that is causing this issue.

maybe the oil control solenoid went bad.

VCT?

We drove the car well over 100 miles at 70-80 mph on Saturday to the UCLA football game. The car ran fantastic and the next day, this trouble starts.

Last 8 of VIN: 4Y648960

Can the VCT solenoid be cleaned and/or flushed out if it get clogged? Or are they one and done?

Still thinking some sort of schmutz fell in when I was changing the front cover and valve covers.

I know that on some other cars there are screens in the phaser/synchronizer that sometimes clog and can be cleaned. I never had to go that far with the LS.

At this time, a Jaguar forum may be a better resource for this problem.

You could try flushing out the solenoid. As far as the phaser... There is a spring loaded pin inside that keeps everything locked until full oil pressure is reached.

Typical symptom of the phaser failing is a rattle at engine startup.

I might suggest that next time... you pull the fuel pump fuse and crank the engine over for 10-20 seconds, so you know the phaser has oil in it.

I'll ask my parts guy if he knows if a solenoid failure would cause the issues you are having.

Part number for the phaser is 2w9z-6256-AA. No longer available through Ford.

Price... $175

Dealer told me it was obsolete... but that a place called Vintage Parts has a couple in stock. They buy discontinued New Old Stock parts for resale.

I didn't get any contact info for Vintage Parts. But my dealer gave you the option to purchase through them.

Also... the cam phaser bolts are one time use only. That could be an issue if they worked loose.

Thanks for all the input. I'll read through that "Engine Rattle" thread. I think I may have seen it during some research.

I did come across this Jag training guide. Good information starting at page 3-19 on the operation of the cam system for the AJ26/27/28.
