Should I buy a MarkVIII?

hey out here

I have always had a hotrod and getting a bit tired of wrenching around with the old school stuff, no AC or heat holley carbs, all of the old school stuff. anyway, I want to steer away from that and looking to get something a bit more modern, a nice car with AC, heat, nice leather interior, quiet ride, and something with some get up and go!!! which brings me here...

there is a 1998 MarkVIII nearby its an LSC, collectors edition, 77000 miles, its a red color, tan interior, and a label in the door jamb with a number 87 out of 1400 or something like that...anyway he is firm on the price of $4500... is it worth it? do these cars move out? what is the resale value?
any info is apprciated.

This looks like a great deal! I'd buy the car if you don't. I have a 1998 LSC red with black interior and its been great. Just make sure the basic things are fine like hids, air suspension, rear ballast, and other things specific to our car. Good luck and good find
 
hmm sounds like i should have jumped on this already! I'll post some pictures after I purchase it.... lol
in the meantime, what are the first mods you would make to the car? would you leave it stock or beef it up with some aftermarket equipment? what are some good mods that would really make a difference?

I love these cars, I have had Iroc Z camero, 5.0 mustang, 350 four bolt in a cutlass. 350 corvette. I think my 96 lsc is about as fast as all the above. and gets 20 mpg. Very fun car to drive, and the number of the cars out there are going down every day, the only real couple of issues with these cars is. Resale is tough the car has to be perfect to ever get what you paid at lease right now, If you get in an accident, I think they total it even for a minor one cus shoot the hood, bumper, grill, and lights to buy just those front end parts would be several thousand close to what your paying.

Would I do it again, Yes but I would only by a gen 1 (96-92?) I like the style better, only buy a LSC version, and has to have a black interior

Very first mods should be gears, T-Lok and a tune for the gears. It will be like a different car.
 
yeah gears would be a good mod , so would t-lok... anyone know what the stock gears are in the 98 lsc? also does this motor in its stock form have enough power to break the wheels and smoke the tire? I dont want to go beating on this guys car lol
anyway, what kind of aftermarket gears are available for this car?

its a 28 spline 8.8 rear end, lsc's came with a 3:27 stock and yes if the car wasnt beaten on youll be able to burn some rubber but its a one wheel peel so enjoy lol. get a gen one(93) they are faster somewhat then any other mark viii stock for stock. i own one and love it to death :D

It will easily smoke tires stock. I have 4.10'S and would have gone with 4.30's if I had known how liveable they are. On gen 2's the speedo works properly without mods after changing gears. All you need is a tune for the top end.
 
If you're familiar with how to work on cars, you should have no problem

it doesn't Have to be an LSC to get a Mark to scream, mine is a Base 93 earlybird, but I have done the smooth intake and dual exh with x pipe, I have no tune and no gears, no high stall tc, and no jmod..and mine is awesome..can't wait to do my 3:73s with TL
 
As to the resale value ... what resale ... you don't sell these you drive them until it becomes your parts car. Then get another ... they are cheap to purchase and fun to drive. As long as you can turn a wrench and keep them going.

Engines last forever ... tranny 98 the best the rest well ... while not the worst they are on the best either.

Oh and to answer another question "Yes" you should get a Mark VIII ... you'll love it ...
 
on a gen 2 get the gears and t-lok done first...it'll keep you happier for a longer time (than any other mods) to save up the loot for boost ....
 
t-lock/4.10 gears, tune, exhuast (headers are a waste for the little hp gain they add) and maybe a diy cai intake.
 
thanks for all the great replies!! Wow 4.10:1 gears? thats seems so low! old school would translate to 60 mph and 3500 rpms!! :eek: I imagine these have OD but arent they a bit steep? anyway, is the intake an easy upgrade? would this be a used part or new? what is a cai intake?

i personally have not done the intake swap (have almost all the parts to start) but from what i have read on a gen 2 it should be a direct swap almost, i am sure those who have done it will chime in. under drive pullys would be an easy swap and will get you 10hp.
 
cobra intake is pretty easy (depending on your mechanical skills) as long as you take your time. just got to remember that all your vac hoses will be connected in different places and will need to be modified, also the throttle body and a sensor on the air intake tube will have to have their harnesses lengthened, and the throttle cable will need to be reconfigured, just get a cobra throttle off of ebay a lot easier
 
What about the gears? where do I get them? 3.73:1 seems like a good gear though, should I just get the t-lok? or is it a kit w/gears and carrier?
 
what i would do (in order of first to last)
1.4.10's got big or go home! lol
2.T-lok this is a must
3.exhuast
4. cobra intake
5. U/D pullies
6.Tune
7. nice 18in wheels with fat tires in the back!
all this should give you a 13sec mark!

If he is going with gears on a Gen II a tune is a must and needs to be done soon after the gears or the car will top out at 98 MPH. A drive shaft is also mandatory.
 
Here's another list...maintain before destruction ..

1) IRS braces
2) 255 walbro pump with trap door mod
3) exhaust
4) gears to fit your driving habits/fuel budget
5) tune immediatly if deciding on 4:10s
6) D/S rotors and ceramic pads
7) Rubbers
8) Cobra Air Intake (CAI)

I have a huge list of "wants" my list of "needs" made sure it got done first however
 
wow, all these mods may be a bit excessive for my driving style, I just want to smoke the tire with t-lok, and give the engine a bit more low end torque to do it, i dont think I want to go 125 , so from what i just read im guessing I need some gears with t-lok, tune for the gears, and then later on get a cobra intake, u/d pulley, exhaust, so how much would all of this cost if I were to get it all done?
