Speed calibration options?

Those who have changed diff gears, which speedometer recal device did you use?

Dallas Mustangs' SpeedCal

or

Dakota Digital's speedometer recalibrator



I am leaning towards the SpeedCal, based on my pm conversations w/ Driller

I would like some opinions
 
Some just swap speed sensor great. But always hear people use dm speedcal
 
I used a SpeedCal. Its still in there as I use taller winter tires as well, and can adapt for it, or the TBird gears in the diff, etc etc as I see fit. All with the stock gear in there from inside the car :)
 
a spedo gear is like $8. call max and he will tell you which one you need based on tire size and gears.

I keep hearing negative things on doing *just* a speedo gear... the teeth are soo fine, hard accelleration shreds them.
 
meh. several thousand miles on "just" my speedo gear.
rocking pegged speedo territory (looked like 148 ish) running with an SHO on my way back to school tonight. few miles at 130 mph. no problems.

dallas speedcal is the best way though.

And do you recall the part number for the speedo gear?
 
This brings up a question I have. I have P245/50R16's on my '97 and my speedo is off about 4mph. If the speedo says 60, the car is actually going 56. I just found this out after I got my Garmin GPS. Is there a "cheap" way to re-calibrate the speedo on a GEN2 so it reads correctly?
 
I had 4:30 in my 97 driller hooked me up with speedo gear for 4:10 since they don't make one for 4:30 my speedo was only off by 3 mph speed cal is the way to go if you gave the extra money otherwise just get a gear yes the teeth are fine finned but unless you live at the track don't worry about it.
 
Cool. I will cheap out, just to get me by for the moment ( and for quickness of install)

And maybe move to a speedcal later.

No.

The Gen 2 speedometer is fed by the Anti-Lock Brake Control Module via the Multiplex Communication Network, using data from the rear ABS sensors.

Changing the "speedo" gear will have absolutely no affect on the speedometer in a Gen 2.

There isn't any way using a commercially available programmer to adjust the Gen 2 speedometer for different tire sizes.
 
I just assumed cause when kk did mine I thought he said he put in the tire size.

There is a value, "Base N/V of Vehicle", that takes tire size into account, but it only affects the transmission tables, not the speedometer.

We'd all be much better off giving advice based only upon what we have actually done ourselves, rather than what we've "heard" or "seen". :rolleyes:

Well that sucks. I guess next time I have to get new tires I'll go with a taller tire. Maybe a 245/55 will work. At least I won't get a speeding ticket for the time being:D

i like having the shorter tires. my speedo is off by about 3 mph with my 275 40s. but with the way i drive, a little speedo error is probably a good thing. :lol:

Correct. And that also refutes Jamie's statement. There is no way the speedometer will be off in a Gen2 either with rear gear changes or speedo gear changes.


The reason why the speedo gear is used is for telling the transmission what to do with the shift schedule/lock-up as a result of the rear gear change. Gen1s are different.

Again, I agree. The tuner can although make smaller percentage adjustments to adjust the "shift/lock-up schedule" particularly in my case where a 4.30 rear gear was used but a black 23-tooth 4.10 speedo gear was used in the transmission. This, of course for the purpose of getting things close with the transmission parameters in the tuning NOT the speedometer reading in the car which remains unaffected.



For the Gen1s, change the speedo gear and go with driller's advice and get the trusty SpeedCal.
 
FWIW, I still have the stock "speedo" gear in mine.

That's actually some advice worth quite a bit here. My black 23-tooth speedo gear got pretty chewed up with the 4.10s. I may go back to a stock speedo gear for some extra durability.
