Does anyone feel like their LS is kinda quick?

Last night coming home from Orlando, I got into a little race on 528.
It was a red, older late 80's era C4 Corvette, with killer looking staggered wheels, and what looked like a nice aftermarker exhaust.
Two guys in this Corvette kept looking over and gunning it. Then my girlfriend told me I had to race them, challenge accepted!
We started at about 60 and went to 100, the LS slowly pulled away, the driver was thrashing on the C4 and you could hear it screaming.
After we slowed down to 60-ish, he wanted to know what I had in my car. I didnt say anything.. kept on going. I'm assuming maybe he did'nt know how to drive the Corvette.

What have you raced and beat? Just wondering if any other LS owners have been suprised with the outcome of a race and their car.

Sorry, not dumb enough to do that on a public road...

C4 Corvettes are not known for being fast. I think the 84 model only had something like 180HP. But, my 2003 LSV8 does feel pretty quick, especially after driving a front wheel drive crackerbox for a week. The LS just isn't that fast a car though. The thing about that C4 Corvette, it can be made very fast with just a little work.

Though it doesnt take much; its a good feeling blowing the doors off a Civic that some punk kid thinks is fast... In your stock, four door, luxury sport sedan. They get so pissed because they got beat by an "old mans car". Or atleast thats what they think it is, because they know nothing about nothing.
I'm thinking of removing my a/c compressor to free up 100 HP, and maybe adding some stickers.

Really? CTS-Vs?

Lol! I said this SAME THING when I drove my LS. These kids rev their little engines at you and their exhaust sounds like a baseball card hitting a bike tire all the time. It doesn't even take any effort for the LS to just cruise to victory while they're back there blowing up their transmission trying to catch up. LOL!

Cruising to victory in a race against a Civic is like George Foreman winning a fistfight against a 4th grade bully.

Its a Bugat-vic!
No , its a Civ-gatti!
Wait, its a Cluster****!
Ive seen this before, and I don't understand the mix match wheels.

good luck against this...fastest production car ev.... wait a minute

LOL!! The bold look of Kohler!

Cruising to a win against a fart can? I can imagine one thing to be even more fun: cruising to a paper-thin loss versus a fart can and watch them celebrate.;)

That would be as under-stating as the looks of a clean LS.

The LS will get raped by any real street cars. Line up against an STi or a charger and see how fast it really is. It can hang with a lot of cars but as the years go buy it gets slower and slower. New Maximas with the 3.5 have a quicker 0-60 time just can't handle as well.

Lol LOTS of sarcasm

Heres your fart can.

^ That's a grapefruit shooter

Lol these made me laugh

Well yeah, its a bit slower now, but to say the LS is slow isnt true. I think thats what the OP is getting at. Yeah, put it up against any straight line car and it wont win (for the most part). But against the average Joe (which is the people that generally street race, anyone with a REAL straight line car is probably taking their sh*t out on the track) the LS, even today, is still going to win probably 3/5 times. I've burned quite a few BMWs (no Ms of course), and gotten burned by SHOs and a couple Mustangs (though one SHO lost, not sure what the hell he was doing...)

As La Boeuf said in True Grit, "You've done nothing when you've bested a fool."

Personally, I don't care what punk-ass kids do in their poopboxes; my car has nothing to prove, and neither do I.

I do a lot of street racing, not proud of it. And only when i'm by myself. Hopefully only take my self out and the other stupid a$$ street racing if something were to go wrong. Anyway...

I'd say I win most of the time by at least half a car length, then again i know how to pick my battles lol

I can only recall 2 times when I have straight up been embarrassed. Once by an E46 M3 and another not too long ago by a modded (550hp) Srt8 Jeep. I mean don't get me wrong i knew I didn't stand a chance in both instances but went for it anyway. In a friendly matter of course.

I actually asked the Jeep guy if he wanted to do a "quick pull." I knew those guys came with like 425hp from factory, didnt know it was modded at that point, but i figured factoring the weight maybe i could stay on his tail for at least a bit. Did a 20 roll...he pulled away so fast on the third honk that I thought I hit the brakes instead of the gas lol It was as if he left me standing. No joke. Needless to say, that experience made me fall in love with that beast of a truck.

By the way, don't know much about those jeeps but had the same body as the 06s. So i guess first gen jeep srt8?

While I agree with most of your statement, I beg to differ a little. Yes, 280hp will only get you so far. But I recently was stupid enough to engage with a brand new Chrysler 300s, on I-75. Don't know which engine he had, but I stayed right on his rear bumber. At one point, I saw he was going to get "pinched" by traffic, so I backed off, to give him right of way, but I was back on his a$$ afterwards. When we got in the clear, I stayed right with him, until I looked at the speedo, and saw I was doing 127. It was then, I thought, "this is stupid", so I backed off.

I ran across this same vehicle "in town" sometime later, and we "played" a little, on a curvy road along the river. While he had me on the low end acceleration on the straights, i could have easily passed him on the curves, if I had known, (been able to see), the oncoming traffic. Point is... while the new Chryslers/Dodges, may have the horsepower/torque, they are still as sloppy in the turns, as they were in in the 70's. The only Chrysler product, that would beat an LS in the curves,(on the street), is a cop car, with a Hemi, or an SRT8.

Can't say much about the GM's. The only experience I had, was with a C06 Corvette, and he walked away from me, light to light. However,,, my dream race, would be on a track, against a Pontiac WS6. A few years back, i had a run in with a punk kid with one. I had the car in my sig, (the predecessor to the Marauder: 2v 4.6 240hp with 3.55 gears). He had 3 girls in the car with him. I got him off the line, (mainly because he didn't know how to Shift his stick :D), but eventually his torque, overtook my led sled. His frown, eventually went to a smile, as he pulled away from me. Had I had my LS at the time, i think the girls would have been riding in grandpa's car.

I guess my ultimate point is this... It takes a certain amount of cubic inches, to put out a certain amount of horsepower. That has drastically decreased over the years. Think about it. 3.9 liters, put out 280hp, with 31mpg. The 2011 Mustang v6, (3.7L), puts out 305hp@31mpg. For a 5-10 year old vehicle, the LS doesn't do that bad. Now let's look backwards... The early 70's Vette's were 5.7l and put out 300hp@20mpg. Again, the LS doesn't do that bad against any current 5.7@350hp and 25mpg. Now let's look at the 70's Chrysler Hemi. 7.0L, vs the current 6.2L for 425hp, and better milage, (if 20mpg highway is good). Of course, I wouldn't forget to mention Ford's Boss 429, or the experimental 484 DOHC. Regardless, the HP to weight ratio, vs MPG is actually kinda "ahead of it's time", fot the LS. Too bad it's such a quirky vehicle. But I guess that's why they cost 35-50k new.

No its not slow but its not fast either. It launches horribly, and the transmission gets confused and shifts slowly compared to other cars. Engine wise the power is there, but getting the power to the back wheels is the problem.

Ive done a bit of street racing, not so much anymore since im trying not to beat on it so much while its still my daily driver. But ive played around with a few stangs, a non sti wrx, a corolla s, even a V8 ram.

Theres been a few others i cant remember. I dont get many people pull up on me with stock wheels still on. But im sure once i get the 19's on people will take a second look. Seems like the more modded a car is, the more people want to race.

That new 300s you raced has only a V6 making 292hp/260tq. The 5.7L for this generation was bumped up to 363. The suspension in those cars is actually somewhat similar to ours being a multilink, but i think the rear is a solid axle. Its also a wider, larger, heavier vehicle and drives like one.

The LS drives like a much smaller vehicle. A tuned LS with intake, exhaust, and a smooth shifting transmission can easily take on a heavy car making 350 horsepower.

No its not slow but its not fast either. It launches horribly, and the transmission gets confused and shifts slowly compared to other cars. Engine wise the power is there, but getting the power to the back wheels is the problem.

I couldn't agree with this more. The transmission in this car drives me insane. I wish I could have gotten the v8 in a manual so badly. It would be almost a different car...

At the end of the day, it's still a luxury sedan. The transmission wasn't built or designed for street racing, I'm sure. Although this drove me insane when I had my LS, It can be explained. Retiree's who were spending 40k on these cars off the lot weren't looking to have a sports car.
