SwedishMark project - The Ugly Duckling

Picture update!
Some pictures from today and from yesterday.
They are really isolated these cars from factory.

Wheel wells filled with foam :D

What I found UNDER the isolation under the backseat. A saw blade, ice scrape and some paper clips.
How the hell did that get under the isolation?
20120814_172620.jpg

Isolation under the floor mat, damn it's thick!

Out with the CD exchanger, cat is helping my friend ;)

Spitfire (name of my cat ;) ) got tired and rested next to the Thunderbird he claimed as his.

The phone unit, compass and original amp :)

Tadaa! It's empty now!

A picture of my fathers installation in his 1993 Mark Viii with a DLS CA41 amplifier in the position of the original amp (it's gonna be hanging upside down in the metal, not in the plastic thing as it is atm).

For those of you who havn't seen a JL 12w7 sub before, it's huge. It's really big! Next to a 1.5L coke bottle
20120815_211755.jpg

Bonus pic of the original amp, my DLS A6 (my A3 for the front system is the same size as the A6 mono) and one of the crossovers for the front system. They're HUGE! Doesn't fit in the doors so they will have to go in the trunk.

All for today! I've been doing som measuring for the subwoofers box and it's gonna be really tight. Really tight! But it's going to work, hopefully :)

Small update!
Bought some wood and started building the box!
I thought I bought 22mm but actually it was 19mm. And the woman in the counter even measured it saying it's 22m!!!
Damn women, can't get anything right. As useless on practical things as a cheese on rollerskates trying to fight grizzly bears.
Anyways, got the box together, sort of. Still need to glue and screw it ;) Only test fittings have been done.
Might do that tomorrow or on saturday.
But here's 3 pictures!

Hey, on that poster of the Swedish girls --- are they all drinking orange juice?!?

Time for an update!
Finished the subwoofer box today and also the box for the amps.
It was a REALLY tight fit for this. If anyone wants measurements just ask me! ^^
Anyway, here's pictures
First from yesterday when we were rust proofing the car (is it called that? o_O)

And here's with the box built and I'm measuring the amps

An old Nissan can be used for more than just a house for the cat (yes, our cat loves to climb through the rust holes and sleep in there)

All of that will also be covered with a grey cloth.

I think this will end up looking great, all you'll see is the subwoofer.

Thanks guys!
Update from today! :)
Added som black on the backside of the dash because I could see the interior color through to the empty spaces around the new stereo.

Got the boombox done

Look what I found under the shifter! Put it back in the same place again for future owners ;)

All for now! :)

Clean is what it's meant to be ;)
Thanks mate :) I'm really happy with how it turned out because it's also my first stereo build ever ^^ Definetly wont be the last either!

Nice dude, now I gotta finish my custom amp rack. Mine is going to have a little window..all custom and junk ;)
20120819_161312.jpg

I took one out of a Mark 3 a while back, but it has a gold emblem in it. Finally found this one today. I think its a neat idea, and for $1.60, why not.

Your car is coming along nicely, keep up the good work

Sounds great mate!
Kind of a shame to hide these beautiful elegant looking amps but it's a cleaner look with them hidden :D
What amps and sub(s) do you have? ;)

with the cover on , i know sweeden isnt as hot as florida, your not worried about heat? maybe a fan in the side of the box.its supposed to blow along the cooling fins for maximum effect. anything in a box or enclosed space without ventilation here in fl wont last long, but a great job for an experienced builder let alone your first try!

Love those DLS Ultimate A-series amps!

Those are probably a lot less expensive there than they are in the USA.

.

What a coincidence? Sapperfire and I have the same idea. Using an original Lincoln opera window for the amp rack. Mine has the chrome lincoln star though.

SwedishMark- Keep up the good work dude. Can't wait to see the finished product!

I am definetly abit worried about the temperature of the amps. Especially the A6 (the mono).
I've been thinking about fans and yes, I will put one or two fans in there but I'm gonna try it without first. The box will be open on the backside for more air.
If they get too hot I will put a fan in there.
Thanks mate! :)

97 Octane: They're gorgeous, the best looking amp I've seen so far in my opinion :)
I don't know if the prices are less in Sweden, we have insane taxes on everything. The A6 mono amp is 850 USD in Sweden and the A3 is 1030 USD.
They're not really cheap no matter how you think of it o_O

In my opinion you shouldn't wait. You will regret it. Buy a good fan & install it so that it keeps those amps cool. When amps are enclosed (even with one side open) they tend to get hot. Worth the extra cash to save an amp from getting ruined.

Maybe not the worlds most interesting post but here's some of this weekend progression!

Decided to paint the tweeters black so they wont be seen through the tweeter mesh
20120824_221652.jpg

Had to do some massaging on the door panel. Those who say 6.5" is an easy fit they're wrong, really wrong! Atleast 6.5" this deep as mine are
20120825_133010.jpg

20120825_135549.jpg

Test fit with door panel on
20120825_140132.jpg

Then time to do some sound deadening on the doors! Used 3 layers total
20120825_165421.jpg

And then thick foam on top of the 3 layers of sound deadening material
20120825_190025.jpg

Worked some on the tweeter pods too. Don't know if this was much effort for nothing but atleast I'm 100% sure they will NOT make unwanted noises ;)

Filled with foam
20120825_200957.jpg

Typical Swedish weather...
20120826_152613.jpg

2 layers on the sides in the rearseat. I will not have any speakers here but I did some in there too
20120826_151815.jpg

Foam in there too!
20120826_173651.jpg

And a pic of one of my helpers
20120826_155635.jpg

Video of the sound deadening (last thing I knock is the place where it's filled with foam from factory)
Silent Coat 3 layers before and after - YouTube
And a video of me testing the system! I did no setup work at all, this was just after I fired it up for the first time! :)
20120826 210318 - YouTube

Doesn't look very much on pictures because all weekend I've been working on sound deadening the doors.

Very nice work mang. The sound deadening will make that thing whisper quiet.

I hope you didnt paint the cone of the tweeters?

I really hope it will! Definetly a big difference from just knocking on the doors :) And a whole different feel when closing the doors.

I might be stupid but not that stupid ;) No, just the surrounding area :)

Excellent work . Excellent choice in your audio equipment. I like what I'm seeing so far.
