I got my first Mark VIII about two years ago after searching for one when I found out about them while looking for parts for my 86 Thunderbird Elan an a 93 Thunderbird, and i love it. But it has become a love hate relationship as of late.

I knew the car needed quite a bit of work when i bought but i just had to have it. Any way, on my way home from school tonight I was driving home and some ***hole was riding my ass for what seemed like miles and he would not pass me. So i stepped on it and the car rev'ed up to almost 6 grand before it down shifted and took off. then it kept shifting speraticly like crazy. I let off the gas and waitined for it to shift again and then i stepped on the gas it just rev'ed up to about 4500 5000 rpm, it would shift, it wouldnt go over 30 mph. Luckly when this happend i was close to home and had to coast the rest of the way hoping i had enough speed to make UP my drive way.

I had a simular problem with my 93 t-bird and it turn out to be a cable by the tranny, easy fix i njust put the cable back on. I checked on the lincoln and it's not the same easy fix problem i hoped it would be.

I'm at a loss until i have some daylight tomorrow.

any thoughts?

Maybe low on fluid? Fluid need to be changed? Your TCC solenoid could also be going bad. Part pictured below and it's inside the pan and held on with 2 nuts and just plugged in. I know it kept mine from having OD after warming up. TC might be going bad too. Have you had any shuddering problems?

WOT downshifts out of 4th gear have been known to SMOKE/kill the one way clutch.
it's common accepted knowledge/practive to turn off OD before going to WOT to prevent this type of damage from occuring.

you should read the trans articles on TCCOA...it'll describe your issue and tell you what the problem is...
Chances are you need a trans at this point, sorry to say

I checked the fluid and it was good although i noticed that the dip stick had rust about 8 inches from the top of the dip stick, so i don't know if water or moisture has gotten in there. Under the car i noticed a milky chocolate colored fluid everyware.

I have noticed a shuttering sometimes when i accelorate from a stop.

I can't shut the overdrive off, I need to replace the swicth. I did go W
OT from 4th just before the problem occured.

Its not the switch there is a wire that breaks.
I am assuming this is a 93-96 car???
But anyhow that's the least of your troubles right now.
Time to find a 98+ trans.
Spend some time and do a little searching on this site and you will get your Mark back up.

irrelevant to the issue..

If you cant switch OD off..then you shouldn't be going WOT at any time after the car has upshifted into 4th gear.

it wasn't the switches fault, it was 100% self inflicted damage.

car won't shift out of first gear now

what part of broken dont you understand....
It's definately not gonna "get better, or fix itself".

You have a cascading failure in progress.
Due to the contaminants from the initial failure, you now are losing more and more of your trans function.

by this time next week.. it probably wont move out of it's own wheel tracks
You need to take Fordnuts advice and start looking for a 98 replacement trans
