Trans help

well trans shop confirmed its burnt up, so either i bring him one i have to rebuild for 700 or i buy a 98 trans from a C.E off elliot in miami but i cannot afford either option so time to park the car! this couldnt have happened when i got my tax check, it has to happen now when i cant afford it. oh well, :q:q:q:qed again !

That sucks. How many miles did you get out of it atleast?

How long until you get the tax check? This sucks dude. You can borrow mine for a while and I'll just drive the Maxima if you need wheels. Is there anything I can help to do to get it fixed? IDC about getting dirty or lifting heavy sh*t. I can get under cars as easy as the next guy. Tell me what to do and I'll do it.

the car has 180k on it so it was due long ago. thanks mike but i think have it figured out.

You got plenty out of it considering its a 97 n all. I'd be thrilled to get 160k w/ mine.

Hey Jamie,

The same thing you are going thru I am going thru but I can only start in first while on a flat surface with no load and cold. I was going up a steep hill when i started having problems. After I start off in 2nd the tranny shifts fine. I am about to drop mine and install the rebuilt I got a couple of months ago.

That is a lot. Mine was rebuilt by the previous owner at around 70K miles.

what everyone is thinking but is afraid to say

unfortunately for him we have a prime example of spending money on your car making it making it look pretty before addressing the mechanicals...a lesson to be learned by all.

From what I read, his car is very well maintained. It was full of fresh fluid. Are we never supposed to do appearance mods on our well maintained cars, just in case the engine or tranny die out of the blue?

I wouldn't expect a tranny with a 170K to last very long especially if it is your DD. It is about priorities...plus fresh fluid in a trans doesn't mean it is mechanically sound.

I don't think this is the case. How was he supposed to know the trans was going to die? I could understand your statement if he was having trans problems before he bought all the cosmetic upgrades. He drove it to work and it was fine...when he drove it home it died. There were no mechanical problems to address.

+1 my trans death was very sudden and unexpected as well. sometimes there aren't any warnings. stuff happens.

my opinion like it or not

you guys are either naive or stupid...pick your poison...performance mods ie headers, 3.73 gear, tune...are meant to gel with other parts that can handle the stress from a factory upgrade...a trans with a 170K on it may do well in factory mode but not upgrade mode.

this I will take to the bank before putting rims & a new intake on my car plus a aftermarket stereo etc....

I was gonna stay out of this till you made that comment. You really do belong at Markviii.org because Calvin will ban people that disagree with his "If you do gears you need to rebuild the trans" theroy. Since you feel the same, you two should go on a date.

Jamie didnt do the gears, headers or tune. Car already had all that done before he did anything. All he did was replace the wheels color and add some color to some dress up parts. So yeah, that must have caused the trans to die.

Chit breaks, fact of life. Just cause you were dumb enough to spend $2500 on a trans does not mean others are dumb because they didnt.

at least I am smart enough not to use a modded 14 year old car as a DD...you are probably more my type...but i really do prefer to date someone gainfully employed.

Like the fatties huh?

I'm not going to be replacing my transmission until it sh*ts the bed, guess what is coming this summer when I'm done cleaning up the abuse my mark has seen? Upgrades. I plan to first upgrade parts that need to be maintained anyway, but I'm not gonna stay stock regardless of my 173k+. It's gonna be a daily driver too. People don't expect well maintained major parts to just kick the bucket, don't be ridiculous. You are spewing all of this modded car nonsense, gears exhaust and a tune mean it needs to be a trailer queen? Major mods may cause it to be impractical to DD a car, but small or supporting mods like exhaust, gears, or tuners aren't exactly extreme and don't kill transmissions, either we break them from stupidity (accidental or otherwise) or they die from wear regardless of mods. Stereo, intake, wheels, etc. are indeed optional and can be wasted money on bling, but why would anyone not bother with making thier car unique, more enjoyable, and special to them when they have every reason to believe it's in great shape. Maybe you like to roll around in a stock beigemobile and look the same while you listen to simon and garfunkel on 8-track, you probably still have a plaid leisure suit you can't bring yourself to get rid of, but you can't expect everyone to be so damn impeccably practical. Sorry this isn't your dictatorship.

You really never can tell.

Perfect maintained motor with 90k on it dont last 1000 miles with a blower before it fails.
Same blower, same tune on a 200+K motor for over 10k miles now and there are ZERO issues.

Chit breaks and we deal with it.

If you think the difference of 25 more hp (Jamies mods) and SLIGHTLY steeper gears is what caused the dammage then you are sorely mistaken.

Thats like saying the 5 year old in the back seat is the reason why the air bags cracked.

i actually do own sansabelt plaid pants

...not my dictarship at all...people are free to do what they want...it comes down to sometimes smart people make not so smart decisions...have done it and learned from my mistakes...I am a tad bit older than some of you brethen mark viii owners...what I have learned from this little dialogue and actually saw it coming is that because of badlsc popularity and my lack thereof my opinion though factually correct would be taken with much backlash from the gallery. For all of you that want to mod a 14 year plus DD go ahead but don't complain when it breaks down then you can't afford to fix it because you spent your money on stuff that really didn't matter. If you do complain expect someone to call you out on it...

As for your collection of plaid, I'm glad you can recognize my poking fun as humor, that's all it was.

Point is, you maintain ignorance despite your accumulated knowledge. Mods didn't cause this. If he had gears installed last week and his trans failed today, you may not seem to be reeling in such a big ol' Red Herring. I don't have any problems with you, but I know Jamie personally, and I really don't think this is something he could have prevented by being smarter or more practical.

Outside the wealthy, who *can* afford to drop large amounts of cash unexpectedly to make sudden repairs? Nobody, but nobody is going to be happy about that sort of issue. Jamie isn't crying poor, he's probably pretty miffed about having to deal with the expense, but it's not like he's gonna junk it now. We all go to extremes when we're mad, but he said it himself, he has a plan for repairing it now.

Stop trying to be the oddball just because there are a few nutswingers who love the popular guy. I'm speaking reason and just so happens my opinion is alternate to yours. No hard feelings or favoritism involved. None here should fear being called out, when someone vents about something it ought to be obvious as adults that they may be speaking a bit outlandishly due to emotion, it's called venting, and since most of us here seem to be friends, it should be tolerated and taken at less than face value. When people settle down and get serious, then questions of merit, sense, value, practicality, etc, should be brought to light.

You don't have to agree, but nor do you need to play the hardass just because you think your age makes you the sage voice of wisdom.

@ 180k anything can & will happen!!! i'm prepared to have anything that wets the bed, replaced immediately. i could drive something new, although i choose not to. just don't care to drive anything else but my marks. with experience good and bad i already know what parts that fail the most to stock up on. maybe i'm just a packrat. i just picked up a verified 20k 98 trans for $300 delivered to my door. cant get any better!!
