Waiting Room

So my roommate thinks his '04 Grand Prix GT can put the LS to shame in the quarter mile. I know I mentioned I'm not a racer but that's just insulting. He referred to it as a sports car and I simply told him that "I'm not going to argue with you on this one". A GTP or GXP maybe but not a grocery getter Grand Prix.

On to a different matter. After mentioning replacing my sway bar, he continued to ask "Why not just the bushings?". I told him why and he continued to be convinced that my argument did not justify the replacement of the whole bar. I said I know they make them but they are not the perfect fit. If I remember right there's some side clearance. I don't want added maintenance of the ES bushings (greasing and what not) and 100k miles for a $100 or so sway bar is not that bad if you ask me. I just can't stand when people think they know my car better than I do, you guys on here yes, grocery getter...no. It's like another one of my buddies saying I don't need SS brake lines and that there is no gain during normal street use. I told him yeh, I don't need them but anything that can help stop two tons of mass that can travel 100+ mph is good right? I don't know much about other cars but don't go bashing on the LS. It may be common but it's far from your typical vehicle from that model year.

Also, he still gets on me for hatin' on his tire shine. I'm sorry but that stuff drives me nuts when it outshines the rest of the car. Plus it slings everywhere.

It's more the fact that he referred to what I see as a very common sedan as a sports car. The definition of "sports car" is open to interpretation but the class can't be as broad to include our cars or the Grand Prix.

Pretty sure the LS weighs just about the same but the little v8 puts out more ponies, more torques (as our friends from across the pond would say), and is geared lower from what I got from a quick search.

against all recommendations, I'd say race him... i've gone up against maximas audis and bmws in the freeway won and lost some = (I don't compete on the carpool or emergency lanes)... never gone head up from a redlight though with anybody worthwhile ... i think they are close enough to be determined by the drivers

If its not the V8 grand prix he will lose.

If its the V8 and he doesn't know how to drive he could still lose. Anything other than a straight line he will also lose.

i wasn't aware there was a v8 grand prix... googled. hypothetical the ls would have the same chances as the v6 grand prix considering there's only 23 hp (2005 grand prix model) difference and assuming the 5.3 v8 is heavier than the 3.9. right?

+1. There wasn't a v8 in 04. Was there? I thought the GXP came along in 05 with the v8 option.

Anyone have an info to show differently?

Exactly what I was thinking, The GXPs it would be close but the numbers are still in the LSs favor. Straight line close call, around a track fuhgeddaboutit. I wasn't going to argue because inside I knew and if I would have said anything he would have flipped a lid and I don't need that nonsense. I'll just let him keep thinking that thing's a sports car. I'm over it.

i get what you're saying... its just always a little fun to have your own personal car and driver test... i had a debate with my brother in law the other day over gm flex fuel vehicles... shoulda argued about religion or politics, no getting through

Lol, thats like when my buddy with a old 92 crown victoria wanted to race me. I was like "Really dude? I think I'll save my gas..." We ended up racing anyway (happened to come to the same light a week later) and it was hilarious. By the time I got to around 50 mph he was already off his accelerator because he knew what was up. Didnt even have to speed to win lol

Uhh.. found some 18" Zeus wheels with tires (seller claims 80% tread left) for $1000. Asked for more pictures and HOLY CURBAGE! The tires are also a bit too small, 2% off stock size. Refinishing looks to be $125/wheel, so that's $500 right there. Not sure what to do

All four have curb rash, but two are just as bad as that one.

Edit: Nevermind, he won't go less than $1000

I would pass unless he comes significantly down on the asking price. At $1000, walk away and call him in a month and see if that number becomes $450. He will find out quickly that they are overpriced with the damage they have.

Who the hell drove on that thing! thats bad. My GFs Mustang doesnt even have curb rash that bad and she can't drive to save her life....

+1 agree for a grand i'm sure you'll. find better wheels

Honestly, if all four are in that condition, $250 is more than fair. I let my near mint oem sports with 95% tread go for $350. The seller is truly out of his mind at $1000.

Those 5.3 V8s are aluminum, and are pretty light. The block itself is something like 80lbs. The 3.8 V6 with the 4 speed, on the other hand, is not going to be able to take a V8 LS with the 5 speed trans. That extra gear keeps the RPMs up better than the GM 4 speeds do although the GM 1st gear will give him better launch. The GP weighs in at about 3500lbs, the LS at about 3800lbs. The power to weight ratio is 13.5lbs/HP on the Lincoln, 17.4lbs/HP on the Pontiac. I predict that in a race the GP will get out of the hole better, but the LS will smoke the GP from about 20MPH on.

there you go jmtiseo the specs are on paper. just strap a rear view camera and let your friend know his hood needs a polish

A part of me believes he doesn't think you ever need to polish. Just keep slapping on turtle wax. Just two opposite ends of the spectrum.

In regards to those wheels, in that condition, that's an expensive set of winter 18's.

If this is a member on here, why didn't you play "Flirtin' with Disaster" during the test drive?

If an LS had the power to back that up it would be badass
