That's a story no one is talking about.
And it's important, not JUST because it's on the C4C site, but because it's on a lot of federal and government sites.

And as we see all of these new federal programs moving into place, it's more and more likely we'll all be forced to use such websites.

College loans will be federal. Medicine will be federal. And mortgages are increasingly owned by the feds. When you're doing any of the registration or "paperwork" associated with such things, you'll be forced to sign similar waivers.

I say this because I've seen too many Obama/gov't apologists says "That's only for car dealers. it has nothing to do with normal people."

So, I participated in the Clunker program.

Remember - no one forced me to turn in my car. If you want to keep your 14 mpg vehicle, you are more than welcome to it... Heck, other than engine parts, you should have lots of parts soon available to you.

I was able to get probably 4 to 5 times what the car was worth as a trade or 2 to 3 times what the car was worth as a 'sell outright'.

I stripped the vehicle and sold the good stuff online. Heck, I saw an Allante that was turned in and they had stripped off the headlights, the taillights, the center console and more (the taillights alone are worth about $400 each) before it got to the dealer lot.

The salvage guy will strip out more - they are allowed to - I got an additional $100 as salvage value.

The vehicle was not only a gas guzzler, it was unsafe, and was dying.

It is basically a tax cut, the good kind - above the line... Conservatives love tax cuts, but maybe not this one - because it might not affect them. Will they trade in their Hummer for a Prius - nope. But, it isn't like they don't have the opportunity...

As far as the website stuff- that has been going on since the Bush administration - for corporate access to government sites. It happens on a lot of corporate to corporate sites as well (the company I work for is a tier 2 supplier to many of the car companies - and when we log on to their sites, we are considered a 'satellite' of their company, and our log on computer is considered part of the car company). It has to do with the legal ramifications, because you are uploading information.

If you are worried about it personally - do it the old fashioned way and leave a paper trail, or go to a library and use their computers.

Remember - they do tell you what they are doing - and you have an opportunity to circumvent or opt out of it. Unlike the Patriot act, which allows the government to access your information and communications with no warning on their part, and without allowing the justice system to do their due diligence.

The parts that get stripped off the cars won't help much.
None of the drivetrain can be recycled.



The main parts that poor people use to keep junk on the road will be gone.

What good is a headlight if I need a transmission?
Or a tail light if I need a transfer case?

My hats off to you for doing what you could do to recycle the parts you could on craigslist.

But I think this program stinks.
They could have done a better job at recycling all useable parts.

What a waste of good parts cars. At least resell them to needy families or those who just need a good 'get-to-work' car. Even new cars become outdated and near worthless between within 5-10 years time.

So they want you to trade in a old clunker for a new one? I rather have something you don't see too often than a car you can't tell its a Honda from a Kia or a Chevy Cobalt. Same body style with mitch-match lights/wheels/grill/badges.

If you really want a car that doesn't burn much gas, get one of those ancient foreign cars which had between 26-36 mpg! $10 use to last me a week in my old Nissan I had way back when

A $500 junkyard motor is cheaper then a car payment.

What if the housing on the transmission on your Allante breaks and can't be welded....were will you find one?

I know some will be around but the cost will go up.
Go try to find a used Power glide.....there are getting hard to find.

People can still buy '98 Sentras that get much better gas mileage than my '98 Exploder (15 mpg). The Sentra should get 35 mpg - so poor people would save over $1,000 in the first 2,000 miles they drive if they chose the Sentra. They cost less than the Exploder (I am sure you can pick them up for less than $1,500) would have cost them, still have a ton of parts out there for them, and are 'affordable'. Poor people can't afford gas for these old gas guzzlers now - and eventually, gas will be back up over $3.00 - then they really can't afford it.

This isn't an issue about poor people.

For your old Rod mr Nut- there are v8 crates that get over 20 mpg...

If the housing breaks on my Caddy's transmission, well, I think there might be 100,000 Northstar drivetrains right now in junk yards, maybe more. There are more drivetrains junked I think then there are cars on the road that use the drive train my caddy does.

However-a very nice looking Bronco - and I bet it is the same with that vehicle - there probably are more drivetrains sitting in junk yards then there are vehicles on the road.

Fuel mileage depends heavily on the type of vehicle that the engine is in. A 88 Crown Vic has a combined 18 mpg. A 88 Bronco has a combined 13. Same engine and I think the same trans. If someone traded in a Bronco and then the dealer sold the engine to someone with a 88 Crown Vic, then the fuel economy goes up. I guess what I am trying to say is that they shouldn't destroy the engines. If the objective is to clean up the air, then do a national emissions inspection yearly. THEN if a car fails and it meets the c4c criteria, then give that person the 3500-4500 credit. You then have a bunch of cleaner cars on the road and people won't have to go into debt anymore than they can afford to. They can have my Mark after they kill me with the Government Flu Inoculation.

Have you ridden in a Sentra. Piss poor ride on any city street. Western Flyer red wagon handling. If you have any size to you, piss poor seating and driving position. Carrying anything over 2 kids and 2 adults is out. Most won't get out of their own way. Yes it is cheap, yes it may get 35 mpg, but how'd you like to be in one in a side collision or rear end collision. I'd rather drive a Ford Explorer, getting 15mpg with underinflated Firestone tires or walk than drive another Sentra again. Nothing against you personally foxpaws.

I don't like being forced to buy a new car, hell I don't even like majority of them, they all look alike except for a selected few and those are beginning to look alike.

I love old cars, they stand out, they are fun to drive (when everything is running right :shifty: ) and old cars teach you to be a mechanic even if you didn't want to.

In the long run even new cars will become old, outdated and break down. A $30,000 car today is a $1,500 budget buy later.

Yes I have, and yes you are right - but when the difference is 20 mile per gallon, and you have 3 kids to feed, that difference could be a huge difference on your financial situation. $25 dollars a week can make a big change in some family situations.

Because it is taking one gas guzzler off the road. My explorer will never travel another mile. Now, if you want to take the time to put in a recycled motor into your explorer, that is fine, it will continue to travel down the road. But, no one will be able to buy mine in favor of a vehicle that gets twice the mileage.

Get your clunker and stop me from fixing mine, or making my hotrod.

If your truck had rear disc brakes, I could put them on my 9 inch if I found them in a junk yard...they are hard to find.
It would save me the $500 that the kit sells for.
It such a waste it makes me ill.

Under the rules all drivetrain gets destoyed.

It hurts guys like me who go the local pick and pull to find gems like that.
It would have been better if they just trashed the titles and let the auto recyclers do what they do best.

Yeah, Ok it would save money but what would Insurance cost for me also, Its higher because of the poor neighborhood I live in and the financing would be ridiculous because of my finances, these things are a big deal. The feds want us to use less right and thats what this is all about right. Then how come the feds let the big oil sell crap gas that doesnt make my car as efficent[10% methanol without tellin the consumer]. Her is one for you when I hacked the cats out of my car it got 5 mpg better on the highway, and If I run real gas I get about an extra 50 miles out of a tank. If I traded it in, and some guy bought it, because his Corolla was trashed, nothing was gained. To make the 2nd half of the program work, they have to destroy them.

No one made me take the explorer in. I stripped it of good parts before it got there. Some guy with an explorer got an excellent deal on my wheels and tires and battery and air cleaner and radio and....

In the end it makes sense to have the 'average' car get better gas mileage, and the clunker program does help achieve that. Less dependency on foreign oil.

If it were mandatory I would fight it tooth and nail, but it isn't. And if northstar parts get hard to find, well, I guess I will find out what it is like owning a classic car for real. You don't think that XKE owners are finding parts for their cars just sitting around in junk yards for cheap. It happens.

Heck, put a northstar in that Rod - there are plenty of guys who turn it, change it into RWD, and supercharge them... I think they are getting around 700hp out of them, and over 700 ft lb of torque... Northstars are the lightest and shortest of the 32v aluminum engines out there... And there are a ton of them in junk yards.

You have no idea what happened to your exploder.
It could be a pop can by now.
If it was put in a pick and pull yard it would help the poor people or rod builders on a budget like me.
Don't you think it could have been done a better way?
