What did you do to your Mark VIII today?

I put my GD plate on the front with some very hefty aluminum serrated screws complete with a rubber grommet that came off one my Dad's airplanes (?). I am not sure he would approve of the GD plate but I think he would pleased that I am reusing hardware that came off one of his airplanes!

..any thoughts are appreciated. I love criusing in my lincoln!

leave the Dead plate, it helps detract from our poorly-designed gen 1 headlights; you also have part of your pops wherever you drive to now

imo, self-expression is rapidly becoming a thing-of-the-past, thanks in part to the growing number of socialists.....if you own the car, make it your own; screw the union

@ Minnesota Mark: You are correct in the lines and I respect your opinion in that regard. I am aware of the purist/authentic thought process. I apply it often in my thinking. Original is good. Yeah, I am also aware of the "Fck you big brother" thought process! My rebelliousness, however, when not keep in check, can get me in trouble! The older I get the easier it is for me to conform! Hope your winter is good! I have always been a Vikings fan BTW! Go Lincoln!

@achesonm8

I had a "clunk" noise on deceleration, usually RIGHT before the car stopped completely. It also did it if I kind of tapped the gas and let off, tapped and let off as well as when I shifted from drive to reverse and back and fourth. Some members suggested several things it could be, but I ultimately decided on doing my U-Joints which I'm happy to report fixed the issue.

If you have any sort of knowledge on working on a car, you can do them yourself. I've NEVER done them and went into it with just what the guys told me, and I successfully changed mine. You have to remove all of about roughly 14 bolts to do the job. That includes the bolts on the rear diff, the gas tank support strap bolts, the exhaust at the flange and the main middle support brace. Took me and my little brother about 5 1/2 hours do it ourselves without really having any idea what we were doing. The longest part of the job was taking everything apart to get to the driveshaft.

Changing the U Joints themselves wasn't really hard at all. Just need some needle nose or something similar to remove the retaining clips, a socket and hammer to compress and knock the old joints out, a C clamp to compress the new ones in (that way you can do it very slowly and precisely as apposed to my caveman removal method with a hammer and socket) a grease gun to grease them afterwards and a lot of patience and cuss words LOL.

Seriously though, that cost me all of $40 for the U Joints and the grease (I borrowed a gun from work) and 5 hours of my life. I could imagine how much a shop would charge to change them....

RE: clunking at stop
I know you seem to have the issue tabbed, but I wanted to share other possibilities for reference. On multiple occasions I have had the front caliper bolts work loose on my 96. It's the damnedest thing. It would cause a clunk when brakes were applied. Once two bolts fell out at the same time and locked the wheel up (while going slow thankfully). I've heard it is a design flaw and could only find the bolt at the dealer. Locktight those things well. These engines, I can report, are strong enough to drag one locked wheel to the side of the road while pulling a trailer.

Dreamie- Diggin' that Mark, but why the chrome fender accents?

They came with the car. I've had it about 2 weeks. Same with the 20" rims. I'll be looking to trade for some nice rims I can put standard tires on...

Yeah, I did some tests the guys recommended in regard to the "clunk". One included putting the car in neutral while decelerating to see if the clunk was still present (which it was not). Pretty certain it was the U Joints.

Thanks for the information though. I may need to pull them off and Lock-Tite all the caliper bolts to be safe..

Did passenger side rear wheel bearing pack Saturday. Had it come apart on me Friday afternoon coming home from work. NOT fun (the bearing coming apart at highway speed), wasn't too bad to change. Then I drove it 200 miles Sunday as a 'test drive'!

Great information gives me the courage to try it myself when I get my bimmer out of the shop. Thanks.Don't think it is brakes either but again great information. Appreciate ya all sharing your thoughts and experience! Rockin on!

swapped smog pumps; had to reuse the '96 mounting bracket- the gen 2 bracket tabs didn't match the gen 1 front end; pump works fine, no more CEL; now to put on the 95 LSC front bumper cover; need to fill, sand, paint it

That's awesome! Glad it worked out for you. :)

Also got a new GPS based app for my phone that shows 0-60mph, 1/4 mile time and 0-100mph time. Did 4 0-60 runs and got a best of 5.6 seconds!!! Slowest was 6.3 seconds. Not bad for an 18 year old car :)

Need new tires soon

I'm getting a wierd grinding noise coming from under the car when I back up. It doesn't do it going forward, just in reverse. And it only does it when I'm giving it gas. If it's coastind in reverse, it doesn't make the noise. But as soon as I give it a little gas it starts grinding. I have no idea what the heck it is but it's worrying me. I put the car up on ramps and looked underneath and can't find anything that looks like metal on metal contact has happened. And it doesn't do it all the time. Just every so often. Anyone else heard of this?

She got driven in the snow this morning, a little slippery but it was better than I was expecting seeing as how I forgot to put some extra weight back there yesterday. It was all lake effect though as the main system dropped south of us, big ol' flakes.

14" in 48 hours.

Yeah, and they said we were only going to get 5-8, pshh.

When I got my 98 it did have those chrome strips. Old owner removed them. They etch a mark right into the paint, and leave many screw holes to be fixed. I wonder how they would look painted color of the car. Look like a flared fender? How about a pic of your Christmas bumper?

Thaywood, make sure the driveshaft is not rubbing the insulation or whatever that stuff is above it. In reverse everything torques differently. Just a thought.

We got the Cougar back from the body shop a couple of days ago with a fresh coat of Toreador paint. She looks fabulous! Mom wants to put the original snowflake wheels back on it so I will have a set of 4 silver painted Mark VIII ten-spokes for sale soon if anybody's interested. :)

Yeah but it is illegal to even raise your hand in your kids direction these days without some bleeding heart liberal trying to put you in jail fro child abuse. And these days they teach kids in school to report their parents for everything.

Belts are cheap at Wal-Mart

So you get an app and don't share the name of it? What gives. LOL

I dont mind the look of the chrome. I'm a sucker for shiny things I can polish.
Here's a few pictures of what I've done to the car thus far.

Ye old backwoods cul-de-sac rattle can painted bumper:

And some of the interior things I've done in the last few weeks including: Added missing electronic rearview mirror and compass sensor; replaced old worn through shifter knob; painted worn center console lids grey until I find a tan replacement; replaced missing window buttons and glued into proper fit; fixed driver's leather door grip area which was broken and separating from the door panel; Replaced bad EATC; Added steering wheel cover and floor mats for a fancier look.

I have also fixed the oil filter housing gasket leak, replaced the water pump, belt, rotten vacuum lines, recut a poorly fit upper rad hose, replaced broken driver's door handle with new chrome, new fuel door button spring, replaced blown low beam HID ballasts, etc etc...

Today I happened to be in the area where I know there's a 97 donor car with 40,000mi I've been picking off of, so I got the radiator (which i just figured out is cracked on mine), full moonroof assembly with motor (mine is missing so many parts you can move it by hand!), and a number of other incidentals including the missing ashtray, center console spring, etc etc...all for $135. Win.

....Oh the things we must do when we buy someone else's problem they didn't feel like fixing anymore. :p

The Mark's been sitting in the driveway for about a month now waiting for the snow to go away. My oldest son parked in the yard yesterday. I told him he needed to move it to the driveway because we were expecting another 6" of snow. He didn't do it! So now his BMW is buried under snow in the yard. I told him good luck getting it out. I go to work in my blazer. I get home and find out he put my 15 year old son behind the wheel and told him to give it gas while he pushed......Guess what they run into?
That's right....my Mark VIII. Flattened the back drivers fender and may have damaged the wheel and who knows what else! There is a good possibility that it's done for. I can't fix that kind and that much damage....Funeral services to be held when the weather get's warmer. :(

Damn! That's not a good way to start the new year. I hope it can be fixed. You did so many improvements over the last year.
