What happened to Detroit?

It doesnt matter what any of these presidents did or didnt do, Michigan has a unique situation unlike any other in the nation. O and btw look up the unemployment rate for michigan b4 and after bush. You might learn something.

What is "unique" about Michigan?

I was talking profitability as whole companies. Youre right, they were closing plants and laying off but collapse wasnt even close nor projected untill the SUV's took a nose dive. think how much they invested into producing those gas hogs, then boom-$3.50+ a gallon. They shouldnt have invested everything into huge escalades and navigators. and pay the guy 29.50/hr to screw on bolts.

Are layoffs good for any city or state? Who was in office when these layoffs started?

It was not Detroit's "leadership that caused the fall of the "big 3" because only GM is headquarted in Detroit Ford is headquarted in Dearborn and Chrysler was Headquarted in Auburn Hills, I think it would be more fair to say Michigan's "leadership" caused the "big 3" to fall, and who was running Michigan until 2003?

Actually I would say that it was the UAW and bad management/leadership that caused the Big Three to fail. Some will argue that it was entirely the fault of the UAW because they forced the auto makers into a situation where they were forced to constantly cut costs in order to stay in the black, thereby resulting in cheaper designs and quality failures.

I still think management has a fair amount of blame in that. They were comfortable making a product that ceased to be world leading for too long because they were confident that they had no competition. They were caught with their pants down when the Japanese entered the market and started build what were arguably better cars.

John Engler, who happens to be a republican.
And he was preceded by a Democrat.
But this isn't about the state government, it's about the city of Detroit. All of Michigan doesn't look like Detroit.

I was born and raised in Detroit, graduated from Cooley high, and proud of it, Detroit will rebound, I have no doubt in my mind.
Why? Why will it rebound?
Who lives there? What do they do there? Is there some reason for productive people to return? Are you going to move back?

As I mentioned earlier, until the unions and the Democrat powers in that city die, there's no way for that city to recover. It will never resemble itself during the classic Motown days again.

There is no new jobs, hence the unemployment rate of almost 15%. Lack of diversity in the manufacturing, agricultural and technological fields= FAIL

Michigan is the 2nd largest producer of fruit.

source?? apples they are but thats it.

Honestly, detroit is lost. They vote and elect idiots and criminals and thieves into positions of power, then expect them to run the city. They even turn down help on renovating cobo in which oakland county would pay for 75% of the cost!!!! Theyre lost.

But the big three isn't in Detroit, GM is in Detroit, Chrysler is in Auburn Hills, and Ford is in Dearborn, which are suburbs of detroit, and have their own governments.
so what role did the "liberals" or Detroit have to do with the fall of the big three.

Why? Why will it rebound?
Who lives there? My family is still there, they are doing well. What do they do there? They work, they invest, they take advantage of the situation that the city is in, like I mentioned before, my grandad just closed on his 10th house, and I am looking to buy my first rental property next week. Is there some reason for productive people to return? I am returning, there are oppourtunities in Michigan, you just have to be a hustler and find them. Are you going to move back? I am going back Thursday evening.

As I mentioned earlier, until the unions and the Democrat powers in that city die, there's no way for that city to recover. It will never resemble itself during the classic Motown days again.

And what was he convicted of? Him and Gov. Sanford did the same thing, he just lied about his.

Why don't you blame the Pope while you're at it?

And what do they grow in Detroit?

Chrysler, and Ford aren't in Detroit.

source?? apples they are but thats it.

Come on, I went to a DPS and I know this.

Agriculture
A wide variety of commodity crops, fruits, and vegetables are grown in Michigan, making it second only to California among U.S. states in the diversity of its agriculture.[54] Michigan is a leading grower of fruit, including blueberries, cherries, apples, grapes, and peaches.[55][56] These fruits are mainly grown in West Michigan. Michigan produces wines, beers and a multitude of processed food products. Kellogg's cereal is based out of Battle Creek, Michigan and processes many locally grown foods. Thornapple Valley, Ballpark Franks, Koegel's, and Hebrew National sausage companies are all based in Michigan.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michigan#Agriculture

Michigan is home to very fertile land in the Flint/Tri-Cities and "Thumb" areas. Products grown there are corn, sugar beets, navy beans, and soy beans. Sugar beet harvesting usually begins the first of October. It takes the sugar factories about five months to process the 3.7 million tons of sugarbeets into 970 million pounds of pure, white sugar.[57] Michigan's largest sugar refiner, Michigan Sugar Company[58] is the largest east of the Mississippi River and the fourth largest in the nation. Michigan Sugar brand names are Pioneer Sugar and the newly incorporated Big Chief Sugar. Potatoes are grown in Northern Michigan, and corn is dominant in Central Michigan. Michigan State University is dedicated to the study of agriculture.

And they have White Castle and Coney Island, that along should rebound Detroit in my eyes. LOL

The UAW isn't right or left.
They shouldn't be, but they are.
For example, in the 2008 election cycle, they donated 99% of their contributions to Democrat candidates. They funded 42 senate candidates.
41 of them were running as Democrats.

Who do you think was the ONLY Republican they supported?
ARLEN SPECTER... who changed parties.

And they spent at least $4.9 MILLION dollars on Obama's campaign.

so what role did the "liberals" or Detroit have to do with the fall of the big three.
I think we've covered this already.
The UAW contributed to the failures of the Big Three.
And that was a contributing factor to the failure of Detroit.
Not the only one, but a contributing one.

Asking what role "liberalism" had in the failures of Detroit is a silly question.
Did you watch the video, it seems like a waste of time to have to repeat it when it was all stated pretty clearly in the first post of the thread.

If you still don't understand after watching it, just ask.

My family is still there, they are doing well....They work, they invest, they take advantage of the situation that the city is in, like I mentioned before, my grandad just closed on his 10th house, and I am looking to buy my first rental property next week.
Maybe your family can buy up the scores of $600 homes and build a castle.
And since you'll be in Detroit, no one will think it strange if you also build a moat and castle wall around it.

I am returning, there are oppourtunities in Michigan, you just have to be a hustler and find them.
So basically the answer is no.
There's no reason to move back besides the fact property is cheap.
No one lives there unless they were born there.

I am going back Thursday evening.
Sounds like you're just visiting.
When you get back, tell us if you really want to stay there for anything OTHER than sentimental reasons. Or if you'd move back WITHOUT a military retirement providing you 50% of your income.

And what was he convicted of? Him and Gov. Sanford did the same thing, he just lied about his.

keep defending him and excusing him.
Good luck with Detroit.... I'm sure it'll come around any day now.

LOL @ the 'GM stlye'

WHAT DID HE DO???
only 12 counts of perjury, misconduct in office and obstruction of justice

And right now they are investigating whether he broke campaign finance rules by paying a million dollar in legal fees out of his campaign fund.

only 12 counts of perjury, misconduct in office and obstruction of justice

And he was found guilty of what? Perjury if I am not mistaking.

My apologies.

Dont apologize, I am 26, buying a home in Colorado Springs, Colorado, have 2 cars, a steady job, all I need is a lady to keep my wanker warm at night. I apologize that you didn't have the common sense to leave Michigan, but you can be my first tenant when I close on this house next week, its in Southfield, so you will be kinda safe. J/K

And he was found guilty of what? Perjury if I am not mistaking.

He pled guilty to two felony counts of obstruction of justice and plead no contest to assaulting a Sheriffs Deputy.

He had to resign from his position as Mayor and was sentenced to 4 months in jail along with another 120 days to be served concurrently.

....which we all know he did. This guy is not just an adulterer. Hes a thug who rode mommys name into his thug palace. And honestly, FRUIT? yeah thats really going to help our economy recover. Thank god Im in the military and have a federal job because I would be unemployed if I didnt. Btw im in the suburbs of detroit and honestly, im glad. If it wern't for the Red Wings and Tigers, and the casinos, I wouldnt come within 10 miles of the city limit.

Michigan is the 2nd largest producer of fruit.

Where do they produce the most fruit?
Key West or San Fransisco? /rimshot

But, like I mentioned and as shown in the video, it's interesting how as the city of Detroit rots and building are torn down, it's reverting back into wilderness. Bears are spotted running through town. Packs of wild dogs. And in the acres of empty lots that had their original buildings torn down, you can find urban farms springing up where people grow some of their own food. It'd be interesting if in the 21st century the previous hub of manufacturing turned into a agrarian culture.

ALSO, Michigan isn't the 2nd largest PRODUCER of fruits- it's the state with the 2nd largest DIVERSITY of crops, behind California.
I don't know if that claim is true, or how it's counted, but that's the correction.

So its "liberal by association" I guess I since my neighbor is gay, I should put a rainbow on my car.

I think it is silly that this guys goes to the worse places in Detroit, and talks all this crap, he is a right wing version of Micheal Moore, just younger

If you still don't understand after watching it, just ask.

I dont need a "moat' or "castle wall" I am a preety good shot from 300 meters.

UHH Yeah, If i stay I will be in trouble.

When you get back, tell us if you really want to stay there for anything OTHER than sentimental reasons. Or if you'd move back WITHOUT a military retirement providing you 50% of your income.

I can tell you I would now, no questions asked.

Thanks for the correction, I will investigate further.

I posted that video on my facebook account.

A friend of mine who was an engineer at Ford just sent me this note:

"Detroit really is a sh*thole.....
I'm lucky I didn't get shot the several times I went into the city when I lived in Michigan."

Southfield?? trashy city, practically a pontiac. But i live in West Bloomfield so I'm a little sheltered.

I have a few family members out that way, Bloomfield Township, and Bloomfield Hills. and you should change your hometown to West Bloomfield, Rep your city.
