which angeleyes are these

man I checked the parts for this stuff online and it seems that a motivated DIYer could do this for less than 75 bux. The inverters are around 30 to 40 bux and the CCFLs range about the same. Plus some heat shrink a little solder to do the job right.

A guy could really hook the ride up with this stuff for cheap. Since I am not going to rebake the lights I think I am going to light up the engine compartment as it lacks proper illumination.

The LEDs don't last long enough? WHat kind of life span are we talking here? Most LEDs run well into the 100,000 hour category. Unless the manufacture is running the LED past its SOA, this shouldn't be a problem. I'm just a little surprised by this.

I did its easy to work with, but buy high brightness wire or you will wont see them at all with lights on at anytime of day.

I am not certain if I will use CCFL or EL Wire for the engine compartment. I am most concerned with illumination at night since that is when light is most needed and most effective.

I think I will by a a small kit and test both. The EL Wire brightness seems to be moderated by the voltage applied so i will look at a few different drivers since they are so cheap.

I was really expecting to see so jacked up prices when i started searching but the CCFLs seem cheap enough to use for just about anything as do the EL Wire lights.

PC-Moders have been using this stuff for a while. Seems about the time I stopped obsessing about computers this crap hit the scene. Figures!

For pics of my EL setup http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/showthread.php?t=4468

I just didn't have the money for ccfl rings from Greyghost, and found the ones on ebay after I ordered.

Man shop the web. After reading about the invert fires I began to notice the prices on the bulbs, CCFLs, and the drivers, ac/dc inverter.

The 12v DC a PC puts in isn’t much different than the 12 you car supplies. So I started to search the web and came up with a load of sites that sell this stuff.

Jeez i was thinking it was elite hardware... I gotta get back on my game; this programming and DB development has atrophied my tek skillz.

The down fall to LED's is heat. When I was making the LED angel eyes I got so many complaints about them burning out so quickly. The problem is that the LED bulbs can't withstand the heat inside the headlight. LED's will last a long time but not under the extreme heat for this application.

The best Angel Eye kits were the Gen V DDE kits with the light boxes. Too bad you can't find those anymore. I have one original kit left that I used for my car. I had a fiber optic cable break and never could find a replacement or I'd have those in my car instead of the CCFL's. Here's a picture of the Gen 2 setup which is almost identical to the Gen V kit:

were the fiber kits brighter than CCFL. It seems that the advantage the ccfls have is that you can use copper wire to make the connections, they ability to resist heat and cost. But they only have 15k to 20k hour MTBF so you could end up with a popeye angel eye config sooner.

The Gen V DDE's were not as bright as the CCFL's but they were real close. The good thing about the Gen V's is that when the bulb burned out all you had to do was head down to Home Depot and get another one. It was very cheap to operate. The worse part about the Gen V kits were the light boxes. With the engine compartment crammed it was hard for folks to find a good spot to locate the bulky boxes.

always a trade off. In comparison to the ccfl I can see the benefit to the Gen V kits now. Yeah too bad those arent around. 15-20K hour MTBF is a bit to narrow for teh ccfl bulbs. but everything I read says they are very durable and only encounter any sort of start failure only when subjected to way way below 0 temperatures.

It seems like a toss up between the two.

Whats wrong with Gen 7 DDE, don't they have light boxes too?

Never seen the Gen 7 kits. I thought Gen V was the last of the fiber optic/light box kits. Got any pics of them?

will the blue CCFLs look similar to the picture on the first page of the thread, or is it more of a Xenon blue color?

It's a true blue, not xenon blue.
