this was demonstrated in an episode of mythbusters where they tried to figure out if using the A/C burned more gas.
the computer makes assumptions and calculations based on those industry standards. it serves as a 'rough' estimate, and is fairly close to the number. however the main concern here is the summation and/or multiplication of error.
anecdotally, my v8, compared to others, is a great engine. i order to measure useage, i wouldn't rely on the computer to calculate mileage per gallon. in fact, i'd use a direct conduit to the combustion chamber to measure fuel use.
