1993 vs 1998

My personal feelings about these features:

'98 has the newer and lighter air suspension! : Don't care..removed anyway

'98 has upgraded Transmission! : ill give you that..but most mark owners won't be beating on it to the point of failure anyway..a simple jmod and mercon v fluid change will work just fine.

'98 has Clear Lens and HID headlights! : gen 1 HIDs..problem solved

'98 has LED turn signal mirrors! : Don't care.

'98 has Puddlelamps! Don't care...ugly shaped mirrors.

'98 has In-GlassAM/FM antenna! : could be nice if your antenna is busted..mine works great, so not a problem for me.

'98 has Tail pipe cutouts! : so do 95s and 96s

'98 has stylized Chrome exhaust Tips! : same as above.

'98 has Double DIN radio! Same as 95s and 96s

'98 has an extra Third light! : Neon is cool..when it actually works, which most 2nd gens at this age now don't anymore and require fixing.

'98 has OBD-II / EEC-V engine management! : this just means now you have to have it emission tested so no deleting cats, and if it does have a CEL on you will not pass, and there is.no performance difference between OBDI and OBDII..just easier tunability.

'98 has Digital Odometer! : don't care

'98 has Coil-On-Plugs ignition system! : no performance difference.

'98 has the Wood trim! : so do some 94s and all 95-96s

'98 has inside door handles in Chrome! : BFD

'98 has rear seat Center Armrest! : don't care, how often do you sit in the back seat? And 96s have this feature if you want to call it a "feature"

'98 has Tilt and Telescoping steering wheel! : Don't care, just another thing to break, which most have by now unless its either low mile or has been fixed..never had it on a car and don't need it.

'98 has windshield mounted Compass! : really? So what..late 95s do also and all 96s.

'98 has an All-Speed Traction Control! : wish it didn't have traction control at all! Mine doesn't work anyway with the w3z2.

'98 has Point-Down on reverse mirror function! : don't care..again, just something else to break on a 15 year old car.

'98 has Driver Seat Memory Presets! So do all 1st gens..never use it anyway..I'm the only one who drives it.

'98 has Aluminum hood! : way easier to dent..the 1st gen plastic hoods are more durable and really not that heavy.

'98 has a Larger anti-sway bar! : this is a plus, ill give you that..but just find one from a sport Thunderbird/cougar or a super coupe and change it.

'98 has more Steering Ratio (+3.14:1)! : eh I like my stiffer steering..anyway, feels more sporty and less like a boat.

'98 has Illuminated Cruise Control buttons! : so do 95s and 96s..can't say the same for the 93s and 94s but I assume they do also, they are just black buttons opposed to interior color keyed.

No disrespect, just pointing out the flaws of most of those "upgraded" features of the 2nd gens. I'll take a 1st gen any day over a 2nd gen..cheaper, less problems, no emmissions (besides 96s) and more aggressive looks..I like the look of the 2nd gens also but not enough to pay premium price for..since most think they are worth $2000-3000 more.

+ a million

nope. 93 cruise buttons are not illuminated. (at least mine are not illuminated.) as i have considered putting an illuminated set in a few times.

Hm, I take that back then, how would you swap illuminated buttons in, is there wiring in the steering wheel for the small LEDs on the 93/94s? Eitherway, not a selling point in my book, now that I think of it, my 97 Thunderbird didn't have illuminated cruise buttons either..I just knew the proper spot by touch to push the buttons and which order to press them to activate cruise control..when I actually used it that is.

What the '93s don't have:

'98 has the newer and lighter air suspension!

'98 has upgraded Transmission!

'98 has Clear Lens and HID headlights!

'98 has LED turn signal mirrors!

'98 has Puddle lamps!

'98 has In-Glass AM/FM antenna!

'98 has Tail pipe cutouts!

'98 has stylized Chrome exhaust Tips!

'98 has Double DIN radio!

'98 has an extra Third light!

'98 has OBD-II / EEC-V engine management!

'98 has Illuminated Cruise Control buttons!

'98 has the PATS system!

but....

'93 does not have the PATS system! +++

'93 has automatically adjustable rear dampers!

'93 has the One piece Driveshaft!

'93 has stout Cup holder!

;)

+1 gen 2 all day long, then night too:D:D:D

This is an interesting thread!...
I guess what it boils down to is what you want...
You should test drive both Gen1 and Gen2.
Both come with there share of expensive problems.
Do some research and decide if you want to do modifications or not and what you want out of it.
I chose the Gen1 because it looks better, feels better, performs better (without mods).
I chose not to mod, to keep it stock. (the way Lincoln meant it to be).
Parts are hard to come by no matter which one you get.

There isn't many MK8's left out there, and it seem's there isn't many that aren't mod'd in some way or another.
But I have one and that's all that counts.
I'm not knocking the Gen2's. I would get one to play around with if the price was right, but it also would have to be un-mod'd, or it wouldn't come home here...:)

Now don't hate me!...It's only my opinon!

What I mean by un-mod'd is...stock suspension and stock drive train. No sense in screwing with a pefectly good Lincoln!

Honestly, I don't consider either one of them to be better than the other. This all comes down to preference and what you like. Just because one person likes it, doesn't mean the next person will. Turns out that some on here have both... I wonder why that is? Well, I would assume it's because they like both. :D

'98 has the newer and lighter air suspension! - Mine does too. Newer than 98 :p

'98 has upgraded Transmission!- In 95, the friction material inside the torque converter was enlarged but the material itself was not upgraded until 98. As for accumulators and springs, mine has been updated 3 years ago. The intermediate one way clutch is pretty much what I'm missing and would love to have a 98-03 trans to J-Mod but until I experience shudder, I see no need in swapping.

'98 has Clear Lens and HID headlights! - Mine too. Dual HID's on top of that.

'98 has LED turn signal mirrors!- It's neat but IMO, belongs on a SUV

'98 has Puddle lamps! - I don't even drive in the rain period. Another useless feature that I personally don't care for.

'98 has In-Glass AM/FM antenna! - I would love to have this. My antenna works perfect but would love to not even have on on the body. Thumbs up for this upgrade.

'98 has Tail pipe cutouts! - Mine does too.

'98 has stylized Chrome exhaust Tips! - Don't really like them. Had two sets and sold them. They look decent but I can't say I prefer those over the ovals I have now.

'98 has Double DIN radio! - Mine does too and I still install a single din. That's my preference but I do love the double din option being there.

'98 has an extra Third light! - I think we all do, unless the neon lighting up is what this meant. Sometimes it works and sometimes it don't on the 97-98. Just another problem but when working properly, it does look nice.

'98 has OBD-II / EEC-V engine management! - Doesn't make any difference to me. Might come in handy for modders or w/e but it's not something I need.

'98 has Digital Odometer! - It is cool looking but it's something I can live without.

'98 has Coil-On-Plugs ignition system! - Another thumbs up! I would also like to be free of plug wires all over the place but I rarely open my hood outside of my garage. Only I see them.

'98 has the Wood trim! - Mine does too and I have a spare set new in the box, never installed.

'98 has inside door handles in Chrome! - Prefer mine to be grey with the way I have my interior laid out. Chrome ones are nice though but....

'98 has rear seat Center Armrest! - If I had this, I would use it in some way as an air port for the three 10's in the trunk. Other than that, nobody is ever in my back seat.

'98 has Tilt and Telescoping steering wheel! - I have not tilted my steering wheel in well over a year, maybe 2. It's positioned right where I want it and never gets moved. So, a moving steering wheel/column is one less thing I have to worry about breaking. I will admit though, it is a neat looking feature to see in action but like most things, I'm sure it gets old.

'98 has windshield mounted Compass! - Mine does too.

'98 has an All-Speed Traction Control! - Mine doesn't and that is one option I am happy about not having. Many would agree. Lincoln should have saved themselves the hassle and not even installed this into the Mark VIII.

'98 has Point-Down on reverse mirror function! - Useless for me and nobody drives my car BUT me.

'98 has Driver Seat Memory Presets! - So do I and the 93's, 94's

'98 has Aluminum hood! - That would be lovely if a hail storm was to ever pop up on me while I had it out of the garage. I prefer the hood I have.

'98 has a Larger anti-sway bar! - Not a racer and don't fly around curves so, I don't notice any sway action in the rear or in the car, period.

'98 has more Steering Ratio (+3.14:1)! - Doesn't matter to me. Turns good enough as is.

'98 has Illuminated Cruise Control buttons! - Mine does too.

'98 has the PATS system! - Wouldn't want that headache.

Now, to me, the Gen 2 just doesn't have the mean looking nose. It's an aggressive look that the Gen 2 lacks. Gen 2's have more of a bubbly looking nose on them and yes, it does make them look more up to date... Am I keeping up with the Jones family next door? No. I want that mean looking nose that the Gen 1 has. Check out the production numbers from 93 thru 98. There were 32,370 93's sold. Do the math! That's more cars sold than 97 and 98 put together. 94 alone also came close to out selling both Gen 2 years. Lincoln likes to move ahead to bigger and better things. They were already ahead of their time when they came out with the Mark VIII.

To the OP, please do your research and decide what you like best. It tends to irritate some owners that have either the Gen 1 or just the Gen 2. I used the word irritate but maybe there is a better word for it. I personally have had a 93, 94, and now have a 95 and out of the 3, I prefer the 95 because of the bumper cut outs, double din option is always there if needed. It has the front end look that "I" like and prefer. You can put a 93 ECU in a 95 and have the performance, if needed. I'm about to swap mine back to the DZA1 ECU because I drive normal. I really don't need the extra spark and don't care if it's not speed limited. I have no business going 140 mph anyway. In the end, it is PREFERENCE!

The Mark8 is one of the only styles of vehicle I know of, where massive amounts of parts are interchangeable thru the years. You can take a Gen1 nose and stick it on a Gen2 body or vise versa. You can swap almost the entire enteriors back and forth. Tons of brake options, tons of suspension options, all depending on what you want--and how deep your pockets are.
I just semi-finished my 98LSC build with a 96LSC nose and a custom hood

Put it this way, Gen II's have the extra content that comes in handy if you ever sell.

Gen II's are also quite a bit rarer than Gen I's.

Stock vs stock with everything in working condition the gen2's have it by miles. The gen1's are just simpler beasts without as many doodads and dated looks. The 2's are just so much more unique and classier.

But I love them all equally.

Another thing I don't think was mentioned, Gen II a Gen II grill is cheap and does not break easily like the one on a Gen I. Getting a Gen I grill can be expensive.

$365 + shipping to be exact but when I bought mine new, it was $284. That was from Tasca. Now look on ebay at what a nice used one cost. Unreal and I'm glad I bought when I did. New corner lenses also went up from when I got mine. They were about $140 each + shipping NIB but now they're $200 each.

I love my Gen 2. Has all the luxuries of many modern cars. Also telescoping steering wheel is nice if your tall and need to move and recline the seat back. Unfortunately I have to sell mine. It's time for a 4 door family car but I plan to stay with Lincoln.

I have a 94 and so far so good. Once I got the air suspension working corectly Its a great car. Fun to drive, and still gets decent gas millage.

Hey TheRebel if you have to go to four doors, I would highly recomend a mercury merauder!

Why? I hear that $h!t all the time. I just don't get it. Why is a 4-door "family" car a prerequisite when you've got kids (I assume you either have kids or soon will:)) I've got a wife, a 7 y/o son and a 5 y/o daughter. And we drive a Mustang Cobra convertible and a Mark VIII LSC. Both have 2 doors. Our friends are always telling us to get a 4-door because we have kids now (we do have the Exploder for those rare occasions when 2 doors isn't enough). Some have even said to get a minivan:eek: Like that'll ever happen:rolleyes: Anyway, as long as the kids can fit in the back and the seats will fold forward so they can get back there, I see no problem at all with a 2-door "family" car. You don't need to sell your Mark. Use it. Like I do. There's nothing wrong with having a family and having a 2-door car. Don't let other people pressure you into doing something you don't want to do. Now if you "want" to sell your Mark and get "family" sedan, more power to ya. I just don't care for 4-doors and unless I can find a good LS or a '63 Mercury Monterey Breezeway that I can afford, you won't see me driving a 4-door again any time soon. But that's just my opinion. YMMV:)

I wouldn't stuff both my kids in the back of a cobra, but a Mark isnt that bad. Although I too have a Mountaineer (Explorer) for when I need more room.. for groceries...or large car parts ;)

Believe it or not, there's plenty of room in the back seat of the Cobra. In fact, it's got more back seat room than my mom's '08 Mustang V-6 convertible. I can even fit my 6'2" 210lb a$$ back there relatively comfortably. Even with the front seats all the way back, the kids fit with plenty of room:) Now that may not be the case in a few years as they get bigger, but for now they're fine. And plus one on the uses of the Exploder. Unfortunately she's down for the count right now with a bad front wheel bearing:(

I too have an 8 yr old and until the camaro vert. broke we only used the 2 door cars for everything.
We do have a town car but that was only a winter car.

Ill jus go ahead and not believe that. I hae had 27 Mustangs. Not sinle one could you fit a normal adult in the back. I was just in a Cobra this mornig and with the seat where I need it to drive there was 3" between the seat back and the lower cusion on the rear seat.
Now maybe if it wa midgets in thefront you cul sit normal adult in the rear.

Main problem is I'm 6'4 and have a bad back. It's painful putting the car seat in the base and knocking my head on the door pillar. sometimes. I guess I'm getting lazy as I get older.:) I had an LS and not interested in another one at this time. At least with a TC I'm familiar with the engine if something were to go wrong with it. A Marauder would be at the top of my list but I can't afford one of those. Plus I drive a lot of highway and think the TCs are one of the best highway cruiser cars.

I had both gens and a bunch of Mark VIIs...they are all great cars..

Butttt the 97 black on ebony lsc is my favorite :D

If I had kids, I would never drive them around in a 2 door mark viii, mustang or any nice car I cared about, kids are little balls of mess, no matter what you do they will find a way to ruin your interior..at least up to a certain age. Why wouldn't you just keep your mark viii and get another sedan, you know you won't get much for it..might as well keep it and turn the insurance off for periods of time you don't use it..at least that way you would still be able to enjoy it when you want.
