Bad engine: How to change????

I have a 97 mark viii.I haven't started tearing into it yet cause i want to do it right. I know i have read some people on this forum dropping there motors from the bottom. I also wondered what would be the best way to do it. I know its not gonna be easy. I don't have access to a lift so ill be doing this in my yard (shade tree mechanics).
My other option is let a local shop do it, but id rather gain the experience and do it myself then loose $1,050.00. But if I don't have the tools to do it i guess they will get to work on it.

Any advice is greatly appreciated
 
Jack stands, large jack, engine crane, engine stand, large reverse torx bits, patience, good memory for vac/wire/bolt locations.
Dont forget to push the steering colum shaft in to the fire wall as far as it will go. Fuel rail and ac coupling tools, catch cans........ not for the faint of heart.

Have it done. Please don't try to do this outside. You're not dealing with a normal engine lol. There is more to it than it looks and if you have the money to have it done, then go that route and ask about WARRANTY!
 
The self warranty is fun as long as you have a friend willing to help do it multiple times!

It's not an easy job the first time. You can bet that vac lines are going to break so you'll need to know where they all go when you replace them.

How many motor swaps do you have under your belt as of now? I would not advise that a Mark motor pop your cherry
 
I know my 5 litre pushrod motors, i can swap them all day long. But when it comes to this lincoln modular, stuffed in there. I didnt know really were to start. I have never did a motor swap in a lincoln mark viii. I have only taken a motor outta one for my mustang. That took quite a bit of work. But that was easy because it wasnt going back in the car, and this one is. I know its gonna be hard and i really dont wanna do it. A shop here outside of hutch quoted me 1050.00 thats before taxes. Is that a resonable price....

I still call :bs: on people dropping it in 45 minutes though. I can disconnect everything blindfolded and drop her perfectly but best time has been 1:45. Granted we drop the tank too but we get the job done.
And thats opperating like a saine human. Not rushing to just get a quick time but also not just lolly gaging or running inside cause its too cold on my fingers outside. :D

bill want to see how fast i can get one out without breaking a single item? rich is about to saturday when he comes to my shop to see the doner motor for his car get dropped.


$1,050 seems alot to me, but then again i have no overhead so i could charge half that.

bigger than the 10gal would allow me to drop alot faster, that, and some walls and a door would be great so im not freezing my a$$ off
 
well i have walls and doors and i still freeze my ass off, but i just sit in the office for a little bit with the heat on and warm up! my office is 30x13 and its heated and ac, but if you go in there to warm up, its hard to go back out in the shop and freeze nuts!!
 
Bill thinks its funny that i have to go warm up so much, 3 cases of hypothermia, 7 cases of frostbite ( 1 on my kawk ) yeah im takin my cold arse in the house

im surprised he hasnt posted any pics of me in my eskimo suit
 
well i have worked outside on a farm in 30 below wind chills with no hat on my bald head and just a hoodie sweat shirt for hours for years and now 7 years of florida had turned me into a candy ass when it comes to cold, it was 31 when i left for work this morning with 15 mph steady wind, that is cold down here i dont care what anyone says, when we live 9 months out of the year in sweltering heat, anything below 50 feels freezing.
 
Damn 1,050 seems like a lot to me...Mine was swapped for 600.

i was posted in Ft Drum NY in Dec of 97.. it was -37* when we landed in Syracuse with a wind chill of -52*. i deployed to Greenland to destroy an old WW2 radio tower in Oct of 99 and decided to do the Knights of the Blue Nose, dive.. yeah, big hole in the midde of the frozen ocean. then various other BS in the snow. Im a Texas guy, born in Houston, love the heat

Yea i would bring it to you, But you live in Waco, Texas? I live in Hutchinson, ks. That would cost bout that much to trailer it that far.

It would be done here and by me in Dawson. Yes, getting it here will be expensive and need to be left for 4-5 days.
 
Sounds to me like you could do it yourself. Bag and tag everything, take photos BEFORE and number code all your vacum line connections. Anything that looks like it might snag you later on, take a photo and tape a note. I cant see it being any tougher than a Supercoupe swap and IMO those arent bad at all.

Perfect time to spend some money on tools anyways. :D Besides you can call any of these Jokers filling up your thread 24/7 if you have any questions. waaaahahaha

Oh and the KID might even saddle up and come do it for ya...Or is that just detail jobs??:D

OK, Sapperfire, I laughed my a$$ off at the F- you snow picture. I think I may make that my desktop background.... It really fits, as I am trying to forge my way through the 8 inches of the white crap that's on and around the parts car so I can remove the moonroof tracks for one of our LVC brethren....
