My $400 LS Registry

No, I meant I will just be out tomorrow and wanted to get the plugs. If I did throw them in, I wouldn't be throwing these old coils back on.

Is NGK really better than Motorcraft or Autolite? Ive never messed with NGK as far as I can remember. (Edit, just saw the car came with NGK plugs, so thats good enough for me) I just don't know if I can justify $8.19x8...$65 for plugs alone, not even coils is insane to me.

HOLY SH*T, $8.19 for the "OE" NGK plug!? The Below OE is about $3, and the above OE is $7. That makes no sense.

This car is gonna be parked for a minute if I need eight $8 plugs, and eight $52 cop's.

I finally drug my ass out of bed today, after letting the car sit on the charger overnight things are a lot better.

The MFS is definitely the culprit of the funky right blinker, if I move the stick when the blinker is on on the right side, then it starts flashing fast and such.

I messed with the electronic parking brake as well just flipped it on and my check engine light decided to come out of a coma. That works now. Heated and cooled seats seem to work. Slow, but they work.

The car cranks over unbelievably fast now, I thought it sounded "normal" when I was working on it but it's like 3 times faster now and fires right up.

Oh and my airbag light is no longer flashing when anything moves.

So far those are my only issues (engine/cats, power steering, rear window, HVAC blower, and the MFS but that's no big deal. It works, it's just sensitive)

What do you guys think I should do cat wise? I want this thing loud and mean, I love the sound of the V8, most other V8's I've had I usually remove the Muffler's and leave everything else in place. When I say loud, I mean reasonable though, not that guy that you can hear driving the beater Honda 2 blocks away.

Cat wise, the stock cats are garbage. Can't even gut them, as I've trashed the one trying to get it off. I'm thinking some of those universal high flow 2.25" cats from eBay or Amazon. I'll have to find a muffler shop to fab it all up for me. My issue is the O2 sensors though. Won't I run too lean or too rich without having O2 sensors? I know the back ones don't do much form what I read just the fronts, so I could just leave the rears plugged in and tied up out of the way, right?

Fully charged battery and my EATC unit now shows code 27-96

I just got down there, saw the connector for the blower motor hanging there, swapped polarity and it works perfect! Air blows great from all settings now! Woohoo! I can't believe it was that simple.

probably be fine as long as you don't mind a CEL on all/most of the time...

...or live in an inspection state

well your car wont be able to verify that it is mixing the proper amount of air and fuel in the engine... long story short, yes you need O2 sensors in a modern fuel injected car.

as far as not having the rear ones in properly... constant CEL again.

The LS already has a high-flow cat..... So say the techs at Magnaflow...

I can't say the last LS I've been in that DIDNT have a CEL on, so I'm kind of expecting it to stay on no matter what I do. But with that being said, I'd love to try and keep it off. I'll try and find some of those universals that have O2 bungs in them. Don't some people fix the issue with a custom tune? No O2s and no cats period?

Definitely not mine, I think a more fitting term for those would've been no-flows lol (if you didn't read my original few posts, the thing had completely clogged cats on both sides)

Pretty sure he is in Michigan just like you. So in the clear if the title isn't branded salvage.

Correct, Michigan. No inspections, and she's got a clean green title.

most people are praying for a CEL to actually come up with their LS... lol

No check engine lights on either of mine, except for at startup.

Wow, that's crazy to hear. Good though, but crazy, lol.

So my insurance rate just to have PLPD on this thing is higher than my full coverage on an '06 Explorer. I'm gonna shop around for a cheaper insurance company, but I'm not paying $200~ a month just for PLPD. If that's the case, then I might unfortunately have to sell it. I can't believe it's so damn high. I think I pay $170ish for full coverage on my Explorer. Clean record, but what's got my tates higher is a less than perfect credit score, and a lapse in having insurance a couple years back.

Might drop to PLPD on my Explorer and see what happens.

Either way, I'm fixing it and having it completely turn-key road ready before anything.

I was just gonna go with those universal cats, but I've read some not-so-thrilling reviews and fitmemt issues. I found some (Evan Fischer?) brand direct bolt on cats for about $180 per side. Gonna keep the third one off, and throw some nice Muffler's on it as well to give it a nice exhaust note. Will most likely throw new O2's on as well.

Current shopping list:
NGK plugs
Coils
Coil bolts
Coil covers (and anything related to the covers)
New rear pass. taillight
Fluids all around. Gonna see what it takes to drain and fill the fluid in these "sealed" transmissions. I think it's the same trans as my Explorer come to think of it. Just a small adapter and a fluid pump if so.

Deep cleaning and detail and then try to track down the PS leak.

wow 200/mo... thats crazy, even in our higher than normal state, I only pay about $100/mo for full coverage on the LS. the car itself is not really that expensive at all, its cheaper for full coverage than either a mustang or focus ST is, and its even less than just PLPD on a dodge neon...

Welcome to Michigan..just wait until you put a plate on that bad boy. On the title it has the weight fee category I believe it's 38 or 43. Even though it's not new you still pay the price of new on the plate. I think mine was like 200-230 somewhere in that range.

drives me crazy that my 13 year old car cost $189 each year to register (with custom license plate) in Michigan as opposed to my dad pays under 100 to register both his EB flex and almost new Ram (which way more out weights my LS) in Tennessee. I would also be OK with paying more that most of the country IF we had some of the best roads, but even with these crazy Secretary of State fees we barely have better roads than most of Iraq or Afghanistan... easily worse than 96% of the country.

Michigan is absurd when it comes to registering/renewing and insuring a vehicle.

I work in Ohio, good buddy has a (80s-early 90's) Mustang GT, 01 LS V8, and a brand new loaded Sierra, full coverage on the truck, LS and liability on the Stang paying what I pay for a base 2006 Explorer. Registration and renewal reflects those low prices too.

Anyways, I made good progress today, found an opening to get a long saw blade in and cut the cat off right after the flange, then was able to hit the bolt with my torch and get it off. The bolt came off the stud so I have to get that off, but so far so good.

I ended up taking it for a ride, literally just maybe 1000 feet total, but it was awesome. Car ran and shifted great.

Gonna try and get the valve cover gaskets done this week (dreading that...reading some poor stories about how ****ty they are to do) and next weekend get new plugs and coils on.

Really stumped on what the power steering issue is though. There's so much gunk built up where the lines meet the rack(?) down by the cats. Gonna have to ge down there with some degreaser, power wash is and then throw some fluid in and see where it goes. That'll be a huge chunk of money not-made if I were to sell it without power steering.

Done with Photobucket. Hasn't let me upload in over a week now. Giving imgur a try. So far, its amazing. Unreal how responsive and fluid it is, vs ungodly slow photobucket. Damn shame I paid for ad-free on there and cant even use it.

Anyways, heres the drivers side (You can see the stud bent, i'm assuming that was when I was trying to pry the damn cat away to get the bolt before I cut it off)

Heres the pass. side:

Kind of bad angles, but it seems like I *should* just be able to hit them with the torch and unscrew them. (HOPEFULLY!)

I think for now, i'm going to try the cheaper NGK copper plugs, did a lot of reading online, and it seems like they are the preferred material, but just don't last as long. Kicking myself today, I went to lowes and didn't even get the bolts for the coils.

I did however find out that a kind of-local junkyard has a few LS'es (00, 02, 03, 04 I think) so im gonna take a ride out there tomorrow morning and pick them clean. Ill grab the coil covers, taillight, and the ashtray assy. if they have one in working order, probably a center console armrest too, since mine is ripped. Also hoping they might have a set of steering wheel controls in good shape. My volume buttons are worn off down to the white and it drives me nuts.

I was curious to see what an LS would run me to insure after reading this thread and my company quoted me $29 a month for minimum liability. I pay $20 a month for my Mark VIII's insurance so it's quite a bit of a step up. $200 a month? Lol, guess I won't be moving to your state any time soon.

Interesting thread, keep up with the good work. It's a shame these cars seem so error prone because they are very nice to look at and have incredibly luxurious interiors.

The seem only to be error prone to the 3rd+ owners...Previous owners may not have been very fastidious in their maintenance...

LOL ... suckers!

Gotta love these insurance companies though, Fn rate increases due to where you live, credit score, policy terms, type of car, color ... blah blah blah.

How about insuring folks on their ability to drive properly, as in accidents, claims and convictions only?

I've had it out with mine several times, threatening to take my business elsewhere always seems to help, last I was rewarded star services member discounts. Mind ya, I do 1 house, 3 to 4 cars annually and pay outright up front for the year as to not get involved with premiums for spreading payments across 12mths, they want extra for that also.

My LS'es are weird though, the 01 is less then the 04 and my wife cuz she has the vagina gets the best deal.

I don't insure thousand dollar cars fully, limit it to simple liability, $410 annually for the 09 Silverado, $623 annually for the 04, where my 01 get's away with $572. wife's LS I forget but it's usually around $70-80 vagina cheaper annually.

Many moons ago I had taken notice my wife's insurance went up by 100$ for the year and the reasoning they gave was cuz she had missed a payment, insufficient funds they called it. I questioned how the f*ck that has anything to do with how she can operate a motor vehicle in traffic on public roads with a perfect driving record? How in the world does able to make payment reflect on her abilities to not end up in an accident that would require the insurance industry to force a pay out.

Retards! ... I ended up telling them to cancel her policy with her permission and put her under my name on my policies and umbrella'd it all. listing her as the Primary of her own car and paid the entire term up front for the year. Been doing this for several decades now. It's they way to go. Never allow them into your accounts each month, something goes wrong and you can't cover the monthly automated withdrawal and they increase the premiums, not going to happen on my watch. Pay them annually upfront every year.

We're about 40% total savings on our premiums simply due to mature drivers, claim free, conviction free, college alumni members, use snow tires and multi policy, wife get's an extra kick for being over 50 years of age, which I will also start to benefit from next year January.

F*ckers get you coming and going, can't stand them ... try and keep them inline every year.

Last year on our house policy renewal I took notice of yet another attempt at a slight increase, again the rebuilding cost goes up 12K each year, I always have to call them and tell them what I think of that and them. Asked them to explain to me how in the world they can justify total rebuilding cost is much greater that actual value of home and anything sold on the block around here.

Sub-dwelling at a stupid amount, like my shed is worth 38K ??? explained as a percentage of total home. can't be lowered they say, very tempted to burn it to the ground and make the call, "bring me my new 38K shed for my lawnmower!!!"

They penalize me for not living near a fire hydrant but I get a water shuttle service discount for living within 7mi from a firestation. go figure ... I told them my neighbors have a swimming pool, plenty of water to start putting a fire out with until the shuttle gets here. No matter they say.

In reality where I live in the event of a house fire, we call it a basement foundation rescue service. Too far from the big city with their bigger trucks and staff.

Can't stand insurance companies, I always each year as I make payment remind them of this and always ask to review new upcoming annual policy increases. Always somehow manage to get them to lower their rate of the increase as I remain claim free to date. They often inform me they have to go in manually and make some changes as it's a software limitation of the renewal that doesn't factor in that I will be calling to BITCH !!!

Anyhow, $623 annually on the latest 04 LSE but I've been operating motor vehicles since 1981, hold a class one licence and insist on insuring any of my rides as strictly pleasure because I have a work truck to go back and forth in. 700+ mi per day, 5 days a week, conviction and claim free helps of course.

Insurance industry is a Fn scam!!!

I'm sure I've paid over 100K in premiums in my lifetime and never seen anything in return. Such a waste of dollars.

Its absolutely absurd, and you made the best point, it seems as if 95% of your payment is based on anything BUT your driving history/record. Credit score, where you live. <-- Thats a funny one.

When I lived with my mom, we were staying in my grandma's "trailer" in a mobile home park. Place was actually nice, and newer, but tons of car break-ins, and vandalisms. I moved to a much nicer neighborhood, bought a house where I have left my car unlocked, and windows down (on accident) numerous times with no issues. My rates went up because im in a higher risk neighborhood now.....okay!

I have a 100% clean record. No tickets, accidents, infractions, anything. I pride myself on being a great, and aggressive driver. Paying just under $200/month for my 06 Explorer.

Girlfriend has an 09 Fusion, paying nearly $300/month with extremely high deductibles. Again, perfectly clean record. The V discount you speak of, doesn't seem to be added to her policy yet, lol. I always laugh when women pay less for insurance because they are better drivers, yet 99% of every close-call i've ever had on the road was from a younger, or elderly woman not paying ANY attention to anything around them.
