My Review on 1st Gen VS 2nd

yeah i casually looked at the xf's in my 100mi radius and no dice on a decent price; where are all the competing jag dealerships? if im close to that place i might keep an eye out.. 'buy it there & sell it here' is a pretty easy thing to do around these parts

...if you lived in NYC or any other metro area where on street parking is your only option...you will want folding mirrors after someone drives too close to your parked car and smashes it off at 40mph. You wake up the next morning with scrap sitting by your drivers door..lmao. Wish I had folding mirrors..but my 00 LS did not come with them. Guess I could upgrade from a newer year huh..?

Nope. AFAIK, the Japanese LS was the only one that had power folding mirrors. It certainly wasn't an option in the US.

I like the ls cause its kinda rare. Its got a v8 in a small package which is awesome. I worked at a auto shop for years. Drove a million cars and nothing stood out to me like the ls. Comparing a brand new car to it is just stupid. And to be honest the newer the car is the more they suck. Everyone thinks a brand new car is more reliable. Well its new it should be. But they are built with cheaper materials, hard as **** to work on( not saying the ls is easy)and wait 100,000 miles it will start falling apart like everything else, maybe sooner. My 03 is probably the newest car I will ever buy.my opinion anything with a v6 sucks. Doesnt matter if its got the hp. Its not the same. And dont start me on european cars. I wont touch them, I wouldnt take a bmw if someone gave it to me. And if there was a perfect car everyone would be driving it.

I just read this on the power folding mirrors, Is there a switch to turn them on or off?
My 03 has that option but they don't auto fold.

Your 03 has mirrors that you can manually fold in and out. I really doubt you have motorized (power) folding mirrors. If so, I'd really like a video of it, because that's a new one on me (for the LS).

I was asking because I indeed saw a LS with the mirrors folded in..the drivers mirror was brand new (you could tell it was just replaced) but people up here will smash your mirror off and keep driving, so it is a common thing to have your mirrors tucked away from traffic coming from the rear. I could care less about the auto folding part..I'd pull them in manually. I don't want another electrical obligation for the pcm to get confused about...lmao.

Sorry, I confused this a little with another old thread that debated whether or not power fold mirrors had any value.

Yes, you can get manually folding mirrors on the LS, my 06 has them.

I agree some people just don't care. I was just looking at window sticker and it says pwr/htd mirrors and was just wondering if meant they automatically fold in and out. I know they are heated. ..

What's pwr fold/hid mirrors mean on the window sticker then?

I assume this was one of those made up used car stickers and not the original factory sticker?

Perhaps they meant that the mirror was manually folding and had power adjustable aim, with heated glass. Or maybe just like so many they didn't really look for it and just checked it off as a feature, like the AWD LSes that you see advertised.

It is an original sticker found in the glove box when I bought the car and you are probably right about the power adjustable part too, I guess I forgot about that part.....lol. I believe it was made 03/21/03 if I'm reading it right.

Interesting. My 06 has folding mirrors. The sticker just says:
"HEATED PWR MIRRORS W/MEM"

Of course, it also says "SPEED SENSITIVE WIPERS" They aren't. Neither are the ones on my 04.

I have the rain sensor on my wipers...cost more when want to replace the windshield too

It means the mirrors (glass) are powered and heated. No LS ever left the factory with power folding mirrors; they all fold with the Mk1 Mod1 shoulder connected to the elbow connected to the wrist.

Now if someone has a way to add the power fold function I'm in!!!!

Wow this thread was Necro-threaded once by over a full year o_O

I am bringing it back once more to discuss the original post. It's now been over 2 years since owning both the First Gen and the Second Gen. And my opinion has changed. I would like to refine my thoughts on the two cars, once more.
So what changed my views?

Well aside from reliability issues with my first gen, I got used to the second Gen. What gave me an illusion that the first gen handled better was simply the response. I still don't like electronic accelerator, but that said my second gen has grown a lot on me. The body roll issue was never actually an issue. It was that the second gen actually handled bumps fairly better, feeling softer making me think the suspension as a whole is soft. But after some cornering, I was wrong. I do own the sport model with the select shift for both vehicles. I would however like to improve the response from the throttle if anyone has any ideas.
As for power, my second Gen easily thwarts the first Gen from a stock vs stock perspective.

Overall, the Second Gen is a much better car, a big step up. It is such a shame that Ford discontinued production after finally getting things right with this car.
I made a thread about parting my first gen. I am done with it, everything OEM that can fail - does. It's like I am rebuilding the car each year, and I have had enough. Only 280,000 kms on it. Such a disappointment.

And on that bomb shell, thank you everyone for the great comments here.

IIRC the electronic throttle sensor has a short dead zone in the first few degrees of motion. Inside the sensor/hinge, there are metal strips in the assembly and metal brushes on the pedal. The position of the brushes changes the conductivity, indicating the pedal position. The beginning of motion has no contact between brushes and strips (I think). You can bend the brushes towards the strips a little bit so they make contact almost immediately. Mustang owners report a huge difference in throttle perception

Hold on I'm going to add to this thread. Sorry guys the Gen1 just plain drives better period. I've driven a few different Gen 1 and Gen2's. Including the Gen 2 LSE. The Gen 1 is smoother, more quite, easier driving, and has way more comfortable seating. The Tranny shifts smoother, the steering is easier.

My 02 handled great with Michelin Pilot Spot PS2's in 245-45-17. I once walked away from a 2008 Mercedes CLK in a curve dong 90mph+. And he was shocked. Then again I can drive too!

The one LS I have not driven is the 03 V8 which if my research is correct just might be the mix between the 1st Gen/2ndGen. The 500 reversion changes came in the 04 Gen 2. The 03 Gen 2 had the higher hp Gen 2 V8, but may have had the Gen 1 V8 sport ride.

My 02 has 194k on it, and I welcome anyone to come drive it compared to a Gen2, and tell me I'm wrong. The Gen 1 is Lincoln quite, smooth and comfortable with engine Torque, and a Sport feel. The Gen 2 is hard core, hard driving all sport. For reference my 02 is a V8 Sport, everything held up in the car. Looks and drives like it has only 50k on it. My 06 is a v8 sport with everything except the rear heated seats. Only 51k. Just checked out by 2 Lincoln dealers. Nothing wrong with it.

Tires make a very big difference. I test drove an 01 new, and didn't like it. I later test drove a new 04, and loved it. Are you sure you are comparing cars with the same tires and with the suspension in the same condition?

You are incorrect. The 500 changes were to the 03 model. There were only very minor changes between 03 and 04 (and some of those happened in the middle of the 03 run) and up to 06 changes remained minor.

Tires could make some difference, but not wind noise, Tranny shifting smoothness, wrap around seat comfort, and the other differences. I plan to change the tires out on the 06 and may even swap the 02's onto the 06 just to see.

Are you sure? about the 03 vs 04-06 changes? Most likely you are correct, and am I'm wrong. I read those changes went into the 04 year. Ill see if I cant find the Article and post it up. But... I know you cannot believe everything you read. Thanks.

One of the changes I know happened for the worse was the door seals. I'm looking for replacements now and I've looked in the junkyards and have noticed most 2nd gens have deterioration and the 1st gens have not. So, I think they went cheap on the material for that part. Unfortunately, they aren't interchangeable between generations. That is probably why there is more wind noise.

Yeah, funny you mentioned that. One of my door seals has a deterioration hole crack in it on the 06 at 51k miles I just got. I thought someone dragged something out the door and damaged it. As I looked at the others, they seemed to be a softer cheaper rubber than the 02 LS has.

Before I even saw your post, one of my projects was to replace that one, then lube the other ones. One of the front headlight to hood rubber seals had the same problem. The funny thing was I read over and over that the Gen 2 was designed quieter. They are not IMO.

Don't get me wrong I love the 06 and hope that I have a future post that's says I was wrong, but..... right now driving them back to back each day, the 02 wins in the quite, smooth comfort department. Ill be getting some less noisy tires for the 06 soon, but I don't see how that is going to change wind noise. I wish I could find some test of interior db sound for the Gen 1 vs Gen 2.
