If you were able to tap on a few things to get it running, I'm sure it's something simple. It might be a heat related problem and maybe something cooled off just right at the same time you were knocking on a few things. He drove it and it heated up again and died. Make sense? Voltage regulator maybe... I know nothing about Explorers but it really sounds like something heat related. If you go back to it today and it cranks right up, you'll know then. I wouldn't call a wrecker until I knew it wasn't going to make it home on it's own.
