2001 Lincoln LS8 in Virginia (757)

That hole is within an inch of the sidewall. A reputable tire shop won't plug that, they're going to say they are only allowed to replace. The reason is there's too much flex that close to the edge of the tire.

However, the car should have a donut. Not pretty, not advisable on the Atlanta bypass loops, but should keep you going until payday.

Eh, I'm just gonna put the old bald tire back on it. And call it a day until payday or w.e

Probably true in most cases, yet some would apply a plug if you designate you're gonna plug it anyway. The 2 main tire shops in my town would do it.
A plug salesman used to puncture his sidewalls and plug them umpteen times, driving around tire store to tire store to sell his plugs.LOL! don-ohio :)^)

Got it plugged. If it comes out I can just take it back and have another tire put on.

^ loosen your degas bottle cap and that plug will last at least another 100k mi ... kid you not!

It should be fine. Good plugs have mushroom heads and use vulcanizing glue to prevent the old tales of plugs falling out. At least, that's what I gathered when my dad started flipping out when I casually mentioned I got a plug for my LS not too long ago. To be honest, I forgot it was even there until seeing your post. I don't even know which wheel it is.

Lol. Well I hope it stays in. I only question it given its proximity to the sidewall. Other than that, plugs aren't a new sight.

Why the sarcasm?

Cuz it won't last ... mark my words! It'll be flat by next week again. Most likely on your way to work on the highway as Murphy would have it. Plugs are for nail/screw holes not tears like that metal you ran over. Potentially the structural belt by the edge got punctured making this attempt of a repair a highly dangerous one.

It's also the wrong (older fashioned) plug and it should have been backed with a patch from the inside if you wanted this to last.

You need a new tire, similar to how you really need to replace all your plastic cooling system parts with brand new OEM stuff.

This plugging tires and loosening degas bottle caps ... aren't real fixes! Like putting 3M duct tape around a radiator hose, it won't last.

Ya know what. I typed a two page paper as a response to you. I'll just boil it down to this as my Coolant does in my degas bottle.

You and your ****ing sarcastic ass comments can go elsewhere.

LOL .... funny! I understand your frustrations, it's not going unnoticed, the truth really does hurt at times. Maybe get some of Don's fish oil.

Starting at 53.0 MTE
Ending at 23.0 MTE

36 mi drive
40 min drive
60 mph

Is that normal???

You have definitely filled in the data wrong there. (I know I said I would stay out, but I can't help it.)

The tops of the OEM coils are epoxy. There is no "black plastic cap" to come off. The same is true for aftermarket. Then non-black coil has a non-black epoxy potting compound. The other coil is missing the Ford part number stamped on the top of the epoxy.
Neither are OEM.

They are not coil packs. They are COPs.

COP = Coil On PLug - a single coil that connects more or less directly to the spark plug (no plug wire)

Coil Pack = package of two or three coils, each coil fires two plugs. Plug wires are used to connect to the plugs.

Got it

On that tire, no spirited driving. Just A to B it as little as possible until you can get it replaced.

BigRig is a bit of a BigAss, but he's OK. The degas cap wasn't a swipe at you.

And, they're VERY picky around here about calling the coils COPs. I don't know why this is so important to the folks here, but it is even though we all know they're just coils.

I don't spirit drive anyway. I'm afraid to go over 65 with this cooling issue. I don't wanna risk a head gasket.

However, yea I see that.

I don't understand the coil thing either. Its clear no one are talking about springs of any sort. <shrug>

Well, coil packs are still around...........my Aerostar coil pack has SIX spark plug wires. My V8 Mercury Marquis 4.6 had two packs with 4 wires each.
I'll take THEM over these coil on plug things anyday.
Soon I have to remove the upper intake manifold to do the three on bank 1 on my V6. The two under the manifold have gone 138K miles, AFAIK. don-ohio :)^)

call me crazy, but I just like to refer to things as what they really are not as something that is similar but also very different...

no body minds the COPs being called coils, most of us just dont like the coils being called coil packs.

most of the time, when somebody calls a coil a coil pack, the correction is there not to be mean, but there to educate the person so that they know the difference going forward. the last thing you want is somebody having to go and talk to a mechanic and then they get got because the mechanic knew they had no ideal what they were talking about and took advantage of the situation.
