Cool options no one knows about the LS's.

Awesome thread! Should be a sticky for sure!

For those that say read the owners manual, next tim you have a problem with your car someone should tell you read the haynes manual!

nice tip! oh, for those with nav if you push and hold the top and bottom buttons for 5 seconds it will ask you for a password. enter 1971 (or is it 1791) and you get into the onboard diagnostics. one word of caution while in there....do NOT push the software update button in there it will wipe the firmware and try to update it even though you don't have an update disc. lots of neat stuff in there, gyro data...speed sensor......just stuff to play with.

some more are if you press and hold the audio and map buttons it will self test, and if you press and hold map and dest it will do a speaker test.

yea i know old thread but i wanted to contribute. ill post more if i find anything else

Hey, this is helpful for some of us who just joined earlier this year. My car didn't come with an owner's manual, I have it saved on my computer, but I can't read that, or print out a janky copy of it, out in BFE when I need to roll down my windows remotely lol.

Pressing 8 and 9 on the keypad at the same time locks all doors

If you press the set button for the seat then press a button on the remote entry then press 1(if thats your seat setting) every time you push that button your seat, mirrors, and tilt will go to that setting

for example I pressed set, then the unlock key on the remote entry , then the number 1. now every time I unlock the car it goes to my seat, mirrors, and tilt settings

its cool

That's actually tied to the FOB. So if you and someone else use different FOB's, you can program the car to different settings :)

Hot Tip

Yep. With the exception of Quik's trip odometer tip and the speaker diagnostic (is that even in the thread?), this thread could just as easily be titled "things you'd know if you'd just RTFM!"

So, do any of y'all have a tip that's not already in the Owner's Manual?

Button hook in the third!

Pressing 8 and 9 on the keypad at the same time locks all doors

and pressing 4 after your code or the factory code will unlock the rest of the doors, and pressing 5 will open the trunk.

Not really "tips" but I did find some interesting info in the manual: It's not necessary to let the engine warm up before driving. Not sure I believe that one... Also the manual discourages any additives to the fuel or oil. Also not sure I buy that. Oh, and the optimal driving speed to get the most MPG's out the V8 is 55 mph.

All of those things are quite true and in-fact apply to almost all newer cars.

Why do you think that you need additives to the fuel or oil?

Well, not all the time but some sea foam in the gas from time to time isn't a bad thing, is it? Isn't it beneficial to clean gunk out of the fule/oil system now and then?

If you got gunk in there somehow, but top tier gasoline has a lot of detergents in it already. So far (since the 2000's) I haven't found the need for any fuel system cleaners.

With good oil, changed on time, you engine should never need anything added to the crankcase for cleaning.

When there is enough wear on the rings, you may find that you do need to clean the throttle-body and the intake manifold now and then that is not done by adding something to the fuel or the oil.

From a post I found when trying to figure out if my DCCV is going out on me:

A/C - Heater System Check:

Press the Off & Floor buttons simultaneously, and then press Auto

Should start a test on your system.

I've been wanting to try this. What would the "floor" button be? Meaning having the heat coming through the floor vents then press and hold with off?

I read on other forums that a lot of people swear by it. Me personally think it just puts on a little exhaust show. To me it was the equivalent of blowing soot from a diesel truck. My f150 just blew white smoke, can't tell ya if it did anything besides that.

Those were gen I instructions.
For gen II:

Front Panel DATC Module Self-Test (On-Demand Diagnostic Trouble Codes — DTCs) is entered by pressing the OFF and DEFROST buttons simultaneously and then pressing the AUTO button within 2 seconds. Record all DTCs displayed.

Front Panel DATC Module Display — Retrieve Continuous Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
To retrieve continuous DTCs, press the OFF and DEFROST buttons simultaneously, followed by pressing the RECIRC button within 2 seconds.

I have often wondered how there can be gunk buildup in the fuel system since every oil company's ads say that their fuel removes gunk. If everyone's fuel removes gunk, how can there be any in the first place? Perhaps crappy gas from "Billy-Bob's Cheap 'n Old Gas Company". However, why would anyone want to use such fuel to save a few cents per gallon? If you drove 100,000 miles, get 20 mpg, and Billy-Bob's gas is 3 cents cheaper per gallon, you only save $150 over that 100,000 miles. I'll stick with high quality gas from reputable oil companies.

Good talk.

Holding my unlock button only opens my moon roof, now i only feel half as cool as the rest of you guys :(

I've seen this post before but never tried any of it till last night, pretty cool.

As I stuck the key in the drivers door to lower the windows, the key wouldn't turn the tumbler at first. It was then that I realized I have never used the key to unlock the doors or trunk, I have always used the key fob LoL. :p

Here's a little piece of info on the LS that I KNOW isn't in the manual. The THX audio company was funded and created specifically for George Lucas and his creation of Star Wars.

just found this out today, most of you probably know this but if you turn the dimmer for the instrument cluster all the way to the max it turns on all the courtesy/dome/map lights

cool way of turning on all the lights if you're searching for something in the car haha

Yup and the LS was the first vehicle to ever use it.
