F@cked

If it is fine then I don't think i paid too too much, maybe for the wheels! If the frame is fine then I will have this car for at least the next 10 years depending on the gay laws they keep passing and if gas gets up to about $10.
Like I said this is the exact car I wanted. If I could get some cheap octastars!

Its a badass car.
Put your parts on it....forget what you have into it.....Drive the $hit out of it.
Sell the wheels....what do you want for them ?

. granted you have way too much money into it between upgrades and the actual price you paid, but none the less the car is fine. just pretend you never saw the underside of the car and block it all out, you are good to go man.

He wouldn't be the first...and won't be the last.

It's tough to forget about.
We'll see after tomorrow.
I am optimistic but I have incredibly bad luck.

put it on jack stands, buy like 6 cans or undercoating, and spray the whole bottom black, then it will look brand new and you can rest easy and enjoy driving it.

pressure wash and seal the underside, the enjoy it....There is nothing in the pictures that would make me suspect the unibody is shot, or you somehow missed a spot where it is damn near rusted all the way through. Sure there are a few parts that could used to be replaced, but nothing out of step for the age/use.

That looks like sitting rust, like it sat on grass or something for a long time.

Its really just surface like everyone else says. Nothing to worry about. By teh way, the rear sway bar looks factory and its still in one piece. Every other Mark on the road has that thing split in two from rust!

Also that "support" under the rear wheel is rust on most every Mark I have seen. There are a few parts that where not paint or treated. On a Gen 1 that seems to be one of them.

I ask again, where did you let it sit? If you did let it sit on dirt, grass, etc for the winter than I can attest that most of this is just from that.

Looks fine to me.

You're worrying about nothing.

Some of those rusty places you have pictured aren't even a part of the unibody and are easily replaced. (fuel tank heat shields, spare wheel cross brace etc)

And the rust on the subframes? That's nothing too - they are thick metal.

Clean it all up nice, paint the underside with POR-15, get some rust free pieces from jamie and you're good. Add full length subframe braces sometime down the road and you'll have a car that won't rust and is stronger than stock!

I got it the day after thanksgiving 08 and it sat in my dads garage for 2 weeks before he booted it then it sat in my driveway in boston untill last week. I placed it no where near dirt or grass.

Well at least your Rear subframe plates are not see through like mine lots of holes in mine...my underside looks worse IMO. then again it is a 94 from WI that had the crap beat out of it before i rescued and revived her. i have new rust free rear subframe plates just dont have the air to remove the old ones and put the new ones in.

Well thats sorta good - but it sat and it sat outside. Outdoor concrete retains and gives off a LOT of moisture :( Trust me, I know. My Mark was out and down for about a year as my new engine was going in. Surface rust developed in some odd spots.

Yeah, well I doubt that had anything to do with it! Definately does not help i'll give you that. Not that fast anyway and look at the brake lines - those were called out a loooong time ago - well before I got the car.

I did drive the car about every other week for about an hour ride to keep the battery charged and for kicks! and I am sorry but I doubt everyone here parks their car in a garage so the fact that a car sits on tar for it's life isn't a cause of that. Yes/No?
I need to turn off my blackberry!

Is that a end link or bolt thats missing in those photos?....can't tell. don't worry about all the surface rust. Might want to sand down that pan and seal that up soon.:D

Oh ya, those brake lines look like that after about a year when they left the line. Mine are just as bad. I need ALL new lines.

Looks like my '93. Typical rust in the same areas. Body is still solid. The rear trunk support, fuel tank shield, IRS subframe and body connectors, rear diff mount, e-brake cables, sway bar and mounts, oil pan, and others are all parts that can be replaced. A little TLC on the rest of it and it'll be just fine. :)

X2 mine looks like that to it's not that bad i still trust my car.

If I had a family friend/mechanic tell me basically that the car is about to fall apart I would be worried too though.

^ True. We have all seen this, Warden has not. Its understandable.

Exactly why I am concerned. Thanks for understanding that point! I am glad you are all optimistic, that is why I posted here, I knew I would get a fair amount of feedback and 65 replies (half of which are me ;) so call it 32) most of which seem logical to what I initially thought before those dreaded words!

Well if all is good I finally have a car naming motif to follow as opposed to what the previous owner called it. Rust Mark or something?

3rd Diagnosis is in

3rd diagnosis is in.
I have to come to the same conclusion that most of you have come to. Normal surface rust for a 13yo northeast car. Thanks for you patience and guidance.
Took a good look under there with the 3rd guy but didn't snap pics - Doh! - and he LOVES the car. Especially the exhaust! Is it going to fall apart tomorrow... NO, will it last 20 more years...???
So I have Geno and this 3rd guy telling me like it is and that other guy that MY guy brought it to saying it's way too bad and splitting. I am going to fix the Rust Mark up! I am going to crawl under the car tonight with MY guy and look at the specific area/s he was told are bad and snap pics.

Brake lines scared the 3rd guy too. Seems to scare everyone including me. i'll probably do the lines this summer myself. What a bitch that'll be! Take care of most of that rust too.

Thank you LVC.:)

Just get a bottle of Naval Jelly and a wire brush then go to town, pressure wash it, then undercoat/seal it. It will look brand new.

Oh for gods sake I couldn't get Jim to do it but maybe you will, GET RID OF THOSE HIDEOUS MUDFLAPS!!! ITS NOT A TRUCK!! LMAO!

Glad it worked out.

You shoulda seen the underside of my 95 when I first got it. That car had a bad air suspension which of course the car was on the ground. Thing really did sit on grass or in weeds for a while. Car's still running and driving fine today.

I drove a car that was over 30yrs old with serious rust problems. Compared to your car it was fine. I say drive it
