What did you do to your Mark VIII today?

Ballast finally gave up the ghost and popped my #23 (15 amp) fuse, i plugged ballast and replaced fuse.. then I could depress the gear selector button :)

Uhhg this kind of electrical BS on 2nd gens just scares me away, you aren't able to get the car out of park if you blow that fuse?? All because of the neon tailight balast??..I really wanted one at first, and still do, cause I love the updated styling, but man there's so many things that fail on 2nd gens..1st gens are so much more simple!...not trying to start a 1st gen vs 2nd gen battle but I feel like you wouldn't be able to use a 2nd gen as a DD with the age of these cars now, so much potential for failure!

lulz. put the key in the right place, shift to neutral, and start the car. there is a way to get around the brake interlock... (on a gen 1 at least, and the ls too iirc.)

:waving:

And everything still works 16 years and 150k later! You just have to know a couple extra tricks and keep a couple extra gizmo's in the parts box to own a gen2. It's not that bad.

But yeah, Gen1's are simpler but not as fun to look at. :N

That's why I ordered a Glitch.. and mine is half a Gen 1 :).. but in all seriousness, I definitely had more issues with the 93, LOTS more. I wouldn't need a Moon roof track if it wasn't for the previous owner messing with it, but even still, the Gen 2 track is far easier to swap. Gen2 is the better car, just has an ugly nose

+1

i like the first gen nose

Gen1, Gen2 there all MARK VIII'S!
I'm just glad I owned one of them!!!
And I've had my problems with this one that's a given! But I wouldn't trade HER for nothing!!
She'll die in my arm's!!!

Have you had a Gen 2 yet? I was die hard fan of the gen 1 too when I had my 93s , then the motor kept having issues, timing chain guide, head gaskets, etc . Got the '98 2 years ago and loved it. Then got another 93---haaaaated it
The 98 had a couple issues with stuff in its way, so I combined what I felt was the best of both worlds

Figured out what broke on the '97 today. It was the lower shock mount on the passenger side rear. When I installed the heavy duty '69 Galaxie shocks, I had to use different size bolts, nuts, and washers. Apparently the car hit the pothole violently enough to actually strip the bolt halfway out! The threads are ruined and now I've got to get a new bolt and nut. :(

Never owned a Gen2, but I do have to admit your (cross breed!) Look's dam good! Better then any other cross/breed I've seen! I doubt I'll ever get the chance to own a Gen2. Had this Gen1 one for 14 years now and the wife for 21 (lol). She know's what I got into this one and will never let me get another one. Still putting money into this one too! She may not look very good but runs like a scalded dog!
When this one is done.....so am I!
Gen1 or Gen2...I would like to have one of each, regardless of the problems! But in all reality it will probably never happen.

Right off the top of my head this is what I have in her. (should be close)

7500 for the car when I bought her at 5 years old.
Fuel pump (600) (shop installed)
Front air springs...shocks...whatever you want to call them and air compressor/drier. (2k) (dealer installed)
Rear upper shock mount's x 2. (90x2= 180)
Aftermarket GG rear shocks. (40)
Headlight fix, upper control arms, front stabilizer bar end links, battery, alternator, water pump, kenwood and 8 speakers, drivers window motor, driver door lock actuator, vent fix, AC recharge, brakes all the way around, tires, leds, hid's, OD fix, back seat fix, driver door hinge fix, (2k by me!)
Probably a lot more I forgot about!

Still to come, trans fluid and filter and possibly more.
Front lower control arms.
Front Strut rod bushings.
Rear bags (there 19 years old, not sure why there still holding air :)
All the bushings in the back (haven't looked back there yet).
And if it's still running when I'm done, maybe paint and bodywork!
And probably some more thing's I'm missing!!

I don't want to add all that up or I might shoot myself in the head! (but then again bullets are hard to come by), But I know she's fun to drive! Even after 14 years.
If i would have known about LVC years ago I would have saved a (buttload) of money.
PS....Don't tell my wife how much I have in the Mark! I've been with her too long for a divorce now.

I bought stuff :D

More stuff coming soon!

Spree, I think of my Gen2 like this..
You know when you have a comfortable bed for a long time, and you love it, but then you finally get a new bed and realize how much better you actually sleep at night..

Its like that, with wheels on it

Mine still has a few places that need cash smeared over them, but its still cheaper than a car note :) I really appreciate the compliments, Thanks :)

Here's my new addition that showed up today

The Glitch also showed up but I didn't take a pic, I'll take a few pics tomorrow during install

Whats the difference between a glitch ballast and a regular one? I've never been able to understand the difference...

Just my 2 cents, but I have owned a GEN1 (1996 base) and a GEN2 (my current 1997 LSC) and love(d) them both. I like the front end design of the GEN1 but the interior of the GEN2 is nicer. I also prefer the power and speed of the GEN1 over the slower GEN2. And yes, having owned one of each, I know my base '96 would walk away from my '97 LSC with ease. That's what I miss about my old '96. That thing was FAST! I have a video of it doing 0-60 in just over 6 seconds! I'm lucky if the '97 LSC will do it in 7. Anyhoo, I love my GEN2, but I would not turn down a GEN1 by any means.

Maybe your gen 2 needs some love if its that slow
I have beat plenty of 1st gens in my 97

All I've done so far is delete the 3rd cat, add an H-pipe, and put cherry bomb glasspacks on it. She's fast n' loud (pun intended), but not as fast as the '96. And now since I've gone from 245/50 to 225/60 tires, it feels like I put 2.73's in the rear end  It'll still spin the tires with the T/C turned off, but it's just not as fast as the '96 by any means. I'm going to do another video eventually to see exactly how fast (or slow) she is with the new tires. Add to that she's got over 213k miles.

In stock form with k&n filter and shift kit i ran a 14.7 old motor cold night
Now i have 3.55s, 2800 stall or so and 3rd cat deleted.
No tune

Actually from your video, your Gen I did it in 6.7s while your Gen II did it in 6.5s.

Also my 95 with a w3z2 ecu FEELS faster but
Before fall i got to race it with my 97 the 95 had a 170lb advantage.
I was half a car ahead by 60 and pulling.

Removed neon

Here's your difference between the Glitch (white) and OEM ballast (black)
Another difference is one works, the other doesn't

And when I open my trunk, it actually OPENS.. like I could launch catapult ammo with it now :) I need to glue some weights to it I think to keep it from bending the arms and smacking the new back glass

And new MB Quart 1000watt mono installed
