It should go show D4 when you shift it into D4 from D5. I used to do this all the time on my daily commute. I had to go down a big hill and I would shift it into D4 and use the engine to keep my speed down and avoid riding the brakes. Mines works just fine in D5 bit I miss being able to...
Mine is doing the exact same thing. I have the 2000 V8 also with about 85K miles on it. So far I have noticed any issues with it other than I cannot downshift from 5 to 4.
My 00 V8 Auto had a shudder between 5th & 4th also. I had the tranny flushed and it helped a bunch but the gear indicator still acts up. If you are tooling down the hwy and slide it over to 4th it takes about 10 - 15 seconds to downshift. It will do that same if you're in 5th, stopped-foot on...

This happens every time I run it through the car wash. As a matter of fact I have condensation in the headlight assy right now since I washed it Sunday. I usually try to drive with the lights on as much as I can to dry them out.
Gordon Automotive on Burnet has done all of my work for the last 10 or 12 years. I turned them loose on my LS when I had a couple of bad coils and they also replaced the plugs. They do good work, not cheap but I trust them.
