What did you do to your Mark VIII today?

I just got back last night from driving to Clanton, AL & back home here in FL - 340 mile trip one-way. Pretty uneventful trip except I think my tranny is about to go in the TBird - it's making all kinds of funny clicking noises, and doesn't want to shift sometimes. All we did was put 700+ highway miles on it - WTF?

That's about 2 hours away from me, maybe 2 1/2 but further down south, below Birmingham. I'm all the way at the top of AL. I can be in Tennessee to buy lottery tickets within 15 min but I never win nothing.

Haven't done anything this week. This weekend will be dedicated to getting 1 of the parents cars up to par.

If I have time I'll throw on the + alt to batt wire so I can be done with my electrical upgrades.

Update: Not that any of you give a sh!t but i'm still averaging 19+mpg non highway miles.+1.5 since spring tuneup. It's just nice as i've never averaged above 17.8mpg since I got the car. I couldn't be happier. :)

nothing in fla, no emissions, inspections, ive even see people drive past police with no windsheild. cars with open headers sticking out from middle of door like sidepipes. excellent

Do you remember when there was inspection stickers here? I remember them - I had them on my first motorcycle and car!

yea i remember. the next day i went and got a 86 el camino that had been sitting in my neighbors yard( because it couldnt pass), dropped in the 350 i built when i yanked it out of my 74 impala that now had 502 ,filled the little trunk with 3 solobarics, headers, flowmasters and mickey thompson tubbies painted it, had it a week and some old lady hit me with a u haul and totaled it~ hit it, i watched as she looked out both side mirrors coulnt see because i was directly behind her and she waslike 4'5" tall and just kept on the gas backing up by the time i got to the window opened the door and took the keys from her the car was about 4'5" crushed. truly sad. th insurance wanted to give me 900 the " book " value. i told them my aluminum heads were a grand. yanked my :q:q:q:q and walked away, damn i loved that car.

I live in the second worse state when it comes to inspection. You have California then NJ and my first Mark was a 96'. Every time it came for inspection a IMRC would go bad and fail sticker

Then they want receipts showing that you have purchased and had work done to fix it. F that BS cause I don't pay anyone to work on my car if at all possible

Come on now, Jersey inspection is a joke since they dropped safety inspection last year. All you need to get a '96-up car through inspection is no check engine light. I love being able to go through inspection with tint! :D Also, not sure if you know this but as long as you have your front plate with you they can't fail you. I don't run a front plate on my Mark or SC.

Yeah it is great now that the economy has forced DMV to give us a break but, the Check Engine Light was a constant on my 96'. Also just cause inspection can only recommend you fix or repair things doesn't mean the Po Po wont give you tickets

I kind of think this was all done to give townships the ability to hove Cops write tickets and fill the county bank accounts

In NC, they can fine you for not fixing your vehicle if the CEL is on (unless it has changed in the last couple of years). My sister had a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee and when she went to get it inspected, the CEL was on for the O2 sensors. The shop told her that if she didn't get it fixed by the end of the month, she would have to pay a $250 fine. And they wouldn't put a sticker on it. Yet she still had to pay the $30+/- for the inspection:eek:

Anyhoo, washed all three of the vehicles and took some glamor shots:

I do agree it may have been done so the cops can write more tickets but I really don't get bothered by me for my tint or lack of front plate so it's all good :D

Thaywood - That's a clean 1st gen Explorer you have there. The once in a blue moon you see one by me the rockers are all rotted out :(

Come on thaywood, time to do something with those headlights before it's too late. Good looking car though. If you make the front side match the side of the housings, it will completely change the front end look of that car.

Haha! The rockers ARE rotted out! The previous owner had some sheetmetal riveted in to cover the rusted out parts. The plastic rocker trim is barely holding on:D This particular Exploder came from PA and it's pretty rusty underneath. But not bad enough to be worried about. I've been driving it "vigorously" for almost 4 years and she's doing great!

Thanks! The headlights are definitely on my "to do" list:) I really need to get it done. It also needs some paint. You can't see it in the pic, but the clearcoat is peeling off the tops of the front fenders above the pinstripe and on the top edges of the doors:(

LOL Well I would expect that coming from PA. They are great trucks, my Dad has had one of every gen so far and my '05 has been great too.

Had to drive the Exploder today. I adjusted the rear height sensor on the Mark yesterday to raise it up just a tiny bit so maybe it would keep the dryrot cracks closed. Unfortunately, I moved the bracket up instead of down, didn't realize until this morning that I had effed up and didn't have time to fix it before leaving for work. So the back end is on the ground right now. Dangit. And I probably won't get to fix it today because my son has a scout meeting at 1830 and by the time it's over, it'll be dark-thirty and I'll be tired. So until tomorrow...

Stared at the engine for a half hour trying to find a good spot to mount the fuse holder for the alt+ to battery wire. Couln't find a decent spot w/o it looking tacky. :( I'm not ballsy enough to run it unfused.

I felt like I needed to accomplish something after that fail, so I burned a 50hz track and set the gain on my sub amp.

You know there are unused fuse slots in the existing fuse box, grab an old harness piece, snag the pins, solder them to wire, slide in place, insert fuse

Did some paint work on the Mark!:D

How did you do this? I wanna do this to my black gen 1 base too. Can you write out a list of what you used and how you did it? I tried painting the chrome strips but the paint came off, i probably didn't do it right. And i'd love to know how you blacked out the grille, chrome strip and all the chrome on the back too. thanks

so the bottom of the engine compartment is getting showered with oil :( I'm not really sure where it's coming from but it appears to be close to where the oil filter is.

During my oil change, I did make sure no old gaskets were stuck on there and thinking that maybe the old filter had a bad gasket. No dice.

Oil continues to leak out and during highway drives, it's showering my driver side cat, giving me oil-burning smell. The k-member is also all wet but the oil pan is dry up front (because it's getting showered near the end).

:(

Even for 4awg? Don't think they make blade fuses in the amprage I'd need. Even if they did I don't think i'd feel comfortable going that route.

If you want to black out your trim it is fairly easy, just time consuming. Start by getting yourself some fine sand paper (600, 1000 grit), blue 3M painters tape and lots of news paper.

Tape along and around the edge of your trim very closely, and put some news paper around the rest like Omen did, then use the 600 grit and rough up the trim, use some water with a little dish soap in it to keep the sand paper from loading up..then once its scuffed with 600, move to 1000 grit and make sure it's all scuffed...then remove all the old tape and news paper..clean off all dust and water with some denatured alcohol..or some kind of mild solvent to get grease and crap off of the mouldings.

Then re-tape around the trim again (make sure its very close to the edges of the trim) and put lots of news paper around the trim to cover your car enough so over spray doesn't get all over.

Buy some black spray paint of your choice (something with the highest gloss you can find) and apply several coats onto the trim, waiting for each coat to dry before spraying another coat.

tip - practice spraying on something else first and get the hang of applying thin even coats so it doesn't run!!

wait for it to thoroughly dry before removing tape. and you are done!

What KeVIIIn said, also to help the Paint stick to the chrome invest in a can of BULLDOG ADHESION PROMOTER . Even though you scuff the chrome good its better to be safe than to be sorry . You can buy it at your local automotive supplier.

My money's on the oil filter adapter gasket:)
